The Riverside Chaucer
When I was returned unto the garden that I spake of, so sweet and green, forth I walke to solace me. Then was I ware how there sat a queen who was exceeding fair over every other creature, as the brilliant sun passes the stars in brightness.
This noble goddess Nature was set upon a flowery hill in a verdant glade. All her halls and bowers were wrought of branches after the art and measure of Nature. Nor was there any bird that comes of procreation that was not ready in her presence, to hear and receive her judgement.
For this was Saint Valentine's day, when every bird of every kind that men can think on comes there to choose his mate. And they made an exceeding great noise; and earth and sea and the trees and all the lakes were so full that there was scarce room for me to stand, so full was the place.
And even as Alan, in the Complaint of Nature, describes Nature in her features and attire, so might men find her in reality. This noble empress, full of grave, bade every bird take his station, as they were wont to stand over on Saint Valentine's day from year to year.
(...)
What more shall I say? Men might find assembled in that place before the noble goddess Nature birds of every sort in this world that have feathers and being. And each by her command was diligent in tenderly choosing his mate.
But to the point: Nature held on her hand a formal eagle, the noblest in shape that she ever found amongst her works, the gentlest and goodliest; in her every noble trait so had its seat that Nature herself rejoiced to look upon her and to kiss her beak many times.
Nature, vicar of the Almighty Lord, who has knit in harmony of exact number hot, cold, heavy, light, moist, and dry, began to speak in a gentle voice: 'Birds, take heed of what I say; and for your welfare and to further your needs I will hasten as fast as I can speak.
Ye well know how on Saint Valentine's day, by my statute and through mine ordinance, ye come to choose your mates, as I prick you with sweet pain, and then fly on your way. But I may not, to win all this world, depart from my just order, that he shall begin who is most worthy.

Mits, and company, there seems to be a slight misunderstanding of what various softwares do.
This isn't going to be very technical because I don't know that much...
McAfee, etc., are primarily antivirus concerns (also deal in trojans, etc., which deranged people spread on the Internet to destroy people's and corporations' computers.
Adware and spyware (which occasionally can destroy your computer too) are parasitic softwares (often associated with popups), which advertisers, and so forth, attach to your computer when you visit sites on the Inet, in order to monitor your usage of the computer for their own monetary gain. These can slow up your computer by recording and sending information to their sites.
You should probably do some research on the various boogers they have (start with Wikipedia), but my initial point was antivirus and antispy, antiadware, softwares are NOT the same things, and we need both kinds of protection ... plus a very good firewall.
You can either buy software from McAfee or Norton or others, or you can search the INet for free software. (Be careful of "shareware" which can carry adware, etc.)
It's pretty murky stuff, but essentially there are a bunch of berserk control freaks out there trying to get some kind of insane thrill out of taking over your computer, but you can get software to keep them out most of the time.
Mits, you weren't getting conflicting reports. McAfee was right saying you didn't have any viruses, and spybot was right saying you had hundreds of parasite files.
As soon as you get the parasites deleted, your computer should start working a lot freer and easier.
Got to go to Albertson's and get a new soap box now....
Sandy thank you so much. I love Chaucer and love teaching Chaucer. What a coincidence!!!!!!!!!!! I had gotten out some of old English Lit textbooks and was just reading The Nun's Priest's Tale. Do you like Boccaccio Have you read The Decameron. Good stuff. donna
Yes Mauley, I've read the Decameron. And I have a recording of Canterbury Tales in the original English. It's so liquid and beautiful, I listen to it every April. I've always had an affinity for Chaucer because his father was in the wine business and so is my husband.
Well I am back home for the evening. Very busy day. Mainly busy time traveling in the car. Just was in on Atlanta Panda Cub update - Jay Pratte, Giant Panda Keeper III has done a great job on the daily write up! Very creative story! He also calls our ButaButa sturdy & spunky We sure know how to pick them don't we!
Yes, SandyShaw, there is something abouty Chaucer and April, When that April with her showers sweet . . . . . . . Old ENglish is very ver fluid. So much to read and so little time. . . . . .
Well Sandra & Donna, it's always interesting to see people discover they like similar things or know the same people! The two of you can enjoy conversations of Chaucer's works.
HELLO....Back from visiting Maggie, had a great time. I see we did not get a new thread when I was gone..guess we will have to wait til Monday. I can't tell is it is Tai or Mei sitting there eating bamboo.
Good nite, Mits!! How was that ball game,Jo? Meeting was with the mayor concerning the farmer's market. Good night all. My day has had a great ending. Just watched a video with more than 100 eagles in it about 40 mins from my house. I am going there one day next week. Gonna make a trial run in case it will be a good spot when Vicky comes over. I will post a link to it tomorow sometime after work Awesome...many many more than the one I did a couple of years ago with 20 or so in a tree near me.
