to get together - However us locals would love to have a gathering with anyone wanting to
come up this summer or fall -
that way we could all get through
the winter knowing Spring was when
we would have a big to do!

We have some bad news to share.......info received from Steve stating that Open House will NOT occur this fall. NCTC is planning to incorporate their open house with Earth Day next April. This is very disappointing.....especially for those who were planning to travel from afar. We are still mulling our options......any suggestions are welcome. :( :(

thanks also Paula for pointing us in the direction and putting the info on here regarding the May 25 update on NCTC Eagle Cam Page

I thought the body of the deceased eagle was too decomposed to tell if there was a brood patch???

And Margy, I think it bears repeating

NCTC Update

May 25, 2011

Things have quieted down at the nest with occasional visits by both the resident female and what appears to be our new resident male. We'll have to wait until next season to hopefully get another clutch.

There has been no sign of the old resident male, and unfortunately the remains of an adult bald eagle were found on the NCTC property recently. The condition of the bird was very poor, so it is unlikely that we will ever know if the bird was our original resident male. Because of the proximity and degree of decomposition there is a possibility that it was "our" bird, however it did not have a brood patch (a patch of skin on the belly where adult birds with eggs or young offspring have removed feathers in order to better incubate their young). While we would anticipated that the resident male that has been nesting at NCTC in recent years would have had a brood patch, we will never know for certain whether this deceased eagle was in fact the resident male.

floralgirl said...

Yeah, me too. If that's the case, then I would have to wonder about that. We could see a brood patch on Liberty when we visited the nest the day Paddy died.

paula eagleholic said...

From what Steve said, that's what I thought too, Sharon.

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

Da%n, I was just getting some acceptance in my heart!

Kay said...

Sent this message on Momster mail, but repeating here in case some miss out on the yahoo mailings.

They are right. The only way we'd ever know differently is if Liberty happened to show up at the nest one day. Seems unlikely and I think we can take Belle's behavior as a sign that she's moving on. How about we follow her example, always holding his memory dear, but accepting reality. JMHO Kay

Here is the message I sent to Lynn regarding the disappointing delay of Open House at NCTC:

What a bummer ! As for me, I couldn't figure on a visit in October and also being able to attend in April, so I vote for resetting our sights on the time when NCTC is available to us and when we should be able to see our precious eagles in all their glory. Meantime you locals could get together in special tribute to Liberty perhaps. We're big kids and can adjust ! Looks like 2011 will have to go down in history as a dark year for us as devoted eagle watchers. Let's all pray for a glorious 2012 ! Hugs, Kay
----------------------------------------------------------------------A Big Left Turn Now--the brood patch comment does open the mind to a possible different reality !!!! By April we should pretty well know what's up with our beloved eagles and the nest. Then we can truly relax and celebrate being together !

Kay said...

LORI and PAULA, thanks so much for good advice on the Dwarf Alberta Spruce. I was all geared up and ready to go to the nursery today. However, the weather is lousy and gave me time to rethink my strategy. Big light bulb went off ! My Michigan grandson and granddaughter both have summer jobs at a nursery up there and have had for several years. Everything starts to go on sale there as soon as Memorial Day is over. That's true here, too, I know. Meantime, I'm going to have my deck power washed and ready a lovely home for my new little tree.

Kay said...

Bouncing back and forth between yahoo mail and here. Bev sent this beautiful outlook in an e-mail message:

"This is how I choose to feel about Liberty . And with a name like that, how can one not feel that he is flying free over new territory. Fly free Liberty and hopefully we will see you again."

I do so like that perspective !!!!!

Jo, did you call Jennifer and let her know that she can free up the room?

Hoda said...

Good Morning/afternoon everyone...

Paula, Thanks for the posting of the NCTC report update. Some questions remain but in my heart I think Liberty is gone and I feel very sad about it...

Sorry about the change of date for the Open House.

A posting on WOW, which reportedly comes from OC, Terri says "an army of ants ate the cable" that connects the camera to the feed!!!!
Things get stranger by the minute as to what is reportedly posted on OC...I asked for the exact posting and have not heard yet.

LYNN, boo-hoo, just cxld my res. at Comfort Inn. :( At least I can hope to see both you and DANAMO as you pass through Columbus sometime this year !

What is the brand of your NOAA radio ? I've procrastinated long enough. Judging by articles in the newspaper I've missed hearing two city wide tornado warning alarms. Time to buy a NOAA !!!!!

Kay said...

HODA, I'm stifling my urge to ROFL over the army of ants comment and the hilarioius images it's conjuring up for me ! Sure as I give into that urge we'll learn that Terri is spot on. I googled "ants eating cable" and learned it has happened, somewhere, some time. Seems there is something sweet about the lining of the cable and certain ants find it gourmet fare.

hedgie said...

Guess I'm heading for the Lenox sale after all. Ccarolyn will be here by 2! Sure hope the bad weather stays away! Here and everywhere!

hedgie said...

Kay, my radio is an All Hazards by Oregon Scientific. Can't remember now what I paid but I think maybe in the $40 range. Got it for Mom originally when she moved to MO but she claimed it didn't work. I had it programmed properly so I don't know what the problem was. I brought it home and it works just fine here. Sis bought Mom a different one---probably a more expensive one! It seems to work...I suspected that the fact that she is right next to an emergency communications radio tower MAY have had something to do with----interference of some kind maybe.

Ms Bookworm said...

Hi, Gang,
Checking in to say Good Morning/Afternoon! Can't talk for long, though--lots to do today.

Wow, it's really good to see that Crunch, Thelma, and Megan have all been here! Miss you when you're gone!
Megan, hope there were no flower disasters with the horrible weather you've had back there! Prayers for everyone in the stormy areas!

Very interesting info about why dogs sniff so much! I KNOW how important it is to Emma, so let "Miss
Snuffle-up-agus" inhale deeply while out and about! Most of the time, I take her out to our parkway to go potty, just because so many neighbors walk their dogs past our house. Emma gets SO busy sniffing, she almost forgets to go potty! She is DEFINITELY nose-oriented!

Sorry to hear of the change of date for the Open House! Although the new date will be very busy with Earth Day stuff, we will know who our eagle couple will be by then. Good that we found out about it this far ahead, so plans can be changed. I think that those close to NCTC should get together anyway in October! Why not?!

Ms Bookworm said...

Well, I need to go find one of my red shirts and make myself presentable. Have some errands to run. Prayers that everyone will have a wonderful RED FRIDAY! Will check back in later. :o]

PA Falcon News 5/27/2011
The Fledge
The little male ran the length of the ledge and took flight at 9:15 AM. He landed on nearby building. Within 15 minutes he was on top of the Rachel Carson State Office Building, his home building. Soon after, he returned to the nest ledge where he was rewarded with a meal. This fledgling now holds the record for earliest fledge and quickest return to the ledge. Watch and rescue crews will continue to track his whereabouts and ensure that if he gets into trouble they can respond and keep him out of harms way.

Mema Jo said...

Go day to you Jim!

OK wish me luck, headed to yoga and to the dentist afterwards. Hopefully the cleaning does not reveal that I need any major work. Thank God for Dental Insurance...they pick up the tab, all I have to do is sit in the chair and pray...

Costume Lady said...

The wires or cables that lead to our Cam, probably have a covering made of soy beans. That is what attracts the ants and other critters.
We had squirrels to chew many wires into, under our Motor Home and it cost an arm and a leg to have them all replaced. Gene has done something with duct tape to keep them away...so far, so good.
NCTC may have to set ant traps to keep them away from the cam wires:(

paula eagleholic said...

Ha Ha, soybeans not apparently a good choice for outdoor cable use, if that's what they are made from!

Kay said...

Whew ! Sure glad I didn't poke fun at the notion of an army of ants chewing through the cable. Remember some of the strange sounds we've heard around the camera at times ? Those little buggers put on an all out offensive and won the battle ! Hmmm, NCTC putting out traps, I dunno. They're pretty adam-ant in their philosophy regarding wildlife and letting what happens happen with no human intervention.

Kay said...

KAY... Look Momsters NO cavities!!! ;^) !!! I do however have to look ahead, and I preapproved them to get approval from my insurance company for a crown. It won't happen before October they think as they are already fully booked. It is OK as my insurance picks up half the tab for the crown so I think it will cost me around 500 dollars...They all seem awfully young to me and they are always very kind and gentle and ask if there is anything I need, all while working on my mouth...don't get much of a chance to answer but smile at their consideration. They load me up with tooth brushes, sulka brushes, and dental floss and walk me to the door wishing to see me again in good health in a few months...it always makes me smile. They are kind.

For a treat I went out to the French Bakery in town and got myself a Camembert cheese and red pepper on French bread Sandwich and also a wonderful chocolate cookie...it is my treat for going to the dentist and I always feel like a little girl when I go there so I follow it up with this treat.
Don't have to be back there again before October but I suspect I will stop at the French Bakery before then... ;^)

hedgie said...

I'm back and caught up on here and email!

LOL.....ants! I DO know that ants are attracted to anything that has current running through it. When my sister lived here, they had electrical outlet boxes FULL of breeding ants. I had one place where an electric line was going outside to a floodlight, and after finding big p--s ants in the basement, Bill started looking and found a nest behind the insulation at that spot. He was an electrician once upon a time (as was his mom Rose) and they both said that they are attracted to current. It would be wise to encase any outdoor wiring in PVC pipe and seal the ends, NCTC!

Good evening! Worked in the yard, then after cleaning up made a delivery and "grossery" shopped.

We had over 40 years of Natl. Geographics to give away. Delivered them to a teacher at one of the elementary schools. Asked a friend who is a librarian. She did not want them but put out a word. I gave Jack a CD that has all the old NG on it. Pretty cool, huh? Ahhhh...empty book shelves!!

Well, who would have thought they would mess up the plans for NCTC Open House!! That just stinks. I did not plan on being there, but think you should go ahead with your fall plans and see if NCTC will open up for you, including the gift shop!!!! Waiting a whole year to get together and truly meeting the newbies just "ain't" right!!! Dog gone it all!

Jo, that story about the tomato was just hilarious. Out of the mouths of babes....

Hey Lynn, hi! Don't get to "talk" at ya much. Just want to "hello."

Hope all are safe with these storms. All we got last night was a lot of lightning and thunder. Nothing tonight yet so maybe we're safe for another night but have to water my posies tomorrow.

Had to replace our birds' suet today. The catbirds, downy woodpecker and (believe it or not) a pair of English sparrows. Our local naturalist said on the tv news about 2 weeks ago that the English sparrows were very scarce lately. Not here, they're not.

The local squirrels have mutilated 2 of our feeders but it's fun to watch their antics. Hang from a tree branch upside down to eat the sunflower seeds from a hanging feeder.

Neighbor told me he scared one and when he went up- the tree he hit his head; Bet that was funny.

Have much to catch up with but am at a loss right now to remember...

Countdown for Shirley. Won't be long now. ☺

I've been thinking on this "no brood patch" thing. Seems to me that we were told initially that the body was too decomposed to tell if there was a brood patch. Not that I want to dash anyone's hope, especially my own, but does anyone else remember that? If I'm not mistaken, I think it was in a message to us from Steve via Paula. The other body had no brood patch. I wonder if there was some confusion in that post? Also, I remember thinking they could at least ID male vs female with length of the talon on the rear toe, and depth of the beak. But again, the message was that it was too decomposed to even do that. So then, how could it NOT be too decomposed to ID a brood patch?

HODA, glad you're cavity free and that you treated yourself to something yummy after being such a good girl !

LYNN, went to OregonScientificStore.com and now have their 50.00 radio headed my way, but for 40.00. I have an idea that it's a never ending "sale".

JO, cute, cute, cute ! The "Tomato Drill" is a priceless !

My Julie, Seth and I went to The Rusty Bucket, akin to Applebee's, for a delicious dinner. Afterward we went to Ohio State's Wetland's, climbing up to the observation tower for a birds eye view of the whole wonderful place. Big excitement was in my spotting a gorgeous Oriole preening atop a high tree limb. It is rare to see one in Central Ohio, we were amazed ! He stayed a long time and then did some flitting about from tree to tree, giving us a good chance to see his bright orange and black coloring. I feel sure he's not alone, but couldn't spot a female or other Orioles. I'm going back at dawn or dusk soon, when I can just sit quietly with binocs and watch the birds in solitude. A huge variety of songbirds, water foul and raptors are at home there. Also home to marmots, muskrats, rabbits.... Julie was in on the ground work of it's development in the late 80's and early 90's. Makes me proud !

Lynne2 said...

wow Kay, sounds like an awesome place and all the more so because of Julie's involvement!

Kay said...

LYNNE, I think we're all asking that "brood patch" question. Hope Steve or someone at NCTC explains the descrepancy in their messages about that.

LINDA, I know how tiring it is to keep up with such young children, you are an angel ! How sweet it is to have such a close relationship with nieces and nephews though.

HODA, thanks for being todays go between for JUDYE ! We miss her ! I can't understand what is going on technically, but know it's very frustrating ! Can't wait to hear it's been fixed and to see her back here with us.

SHIRLEY, I know you've said goodnight, but tomorrow do tell us how the gate duty went.

LOLLY, enjoy your reading. I'm heading for bed now and imagine a few pages of reading will put me right to sleep.

Will say my prayers for all in need and for traveling mercies for Paula and any one else on the roads with the holiday traffic.

I'm going to predict that most of us Early Birds will sleep in for a couple of days since we have no cam. So, we'll see ya when we see ya !

SBBC for the week so far is now over 200. They are getting BIGGER, and there is poop, blood, guts, whatever it is all over my walls and blinds. Can't use the sun porch at all to eat or sit and have coffee in the AM. Even as I type, there are several flying around here in the kitchen.....

I'll be beach traffic was a nightmare tonight. Although, sometimes heading downy oshun, hon (what the folk in Baltimore say which means, going down to the ocean, hon...HON is big in Baltimore, and there is even a HONFEST every year) isn't so bad when you leave later in the evening. Hope she missed the storms, too.

Lynne, I have to wonder WHO exactly examined the remains....to change the story, there would have to be two different people....and maybe 2nd person knew more than the first one....As Megan said, she definitely saw Lib's brood patch the day that Paddy passed.

hedgie/Lynn give Liesl a scratch behind the ears for me tomorrow before the vets and I think she has a loving Mom she is a lucky pup that one...

Lynne 2 THANK GOD I now have an idea of what you were talking about...LOL is right what a relief. Stink bugs scare me and they come in the Kootenay Region sometime over the summer. I remember the first time I saw one I was in a panic because it landed on my shoulder...UGH!!!

Hoda, my most funny SB story was this past winter, I was making a cake. My step mother Donna called (she lives in PA) and I was on the phone with her as I was icing it. She was right smack in the middle of a detailed story when I felt a tickle on the back of my neck. SO, I swatted my neck, and it was a STINKBUG, and it landed right in the middle of the cake on the icing! Well, I was MORTIFIED, but I couldn't scream because I didn't want to scare Donna! I was freaking out!

Lynne2 said...

yes Lynn, I'd be interested in knowing who had their hands on the eagle.

Lynne, ROFL at your Baltimore-speak!!! How many times have I heard that line!! We had MANY transfers to our plant from "Baltimer".

I was reading what I had missed on the blog and watched the video that Lynne linked us with...that is the same way we make traps for the snails and slugs that try to take over my flower gardens.Works. Now, with the LED light in the bottom of the container, it will surely trap a lot of stink bugs.
Can't wait to try that out!

Lynne, seems GG's new meds are helping with the pain a lot. Hope it continues:) Thanks for asking and thanks for all those sweet BB photos. She keeps them in a folder on her table:)

Getting on to say good night!

Lynne, I knew immediatly what SBBC was! Have listened to you so often rant and rave about the horrible things! LOL

Going to be busy tomorrow. Need to water pots, run errands and then we are going to friends in the afternoon. Laurel is coming Sunday, so really should do some preparation there!

I do hope everyone has a grand weekend! Gotta remember to put our flag out in the morning. Laurel's street is so neat....every house has a flag out by the curb. Joey is in Rotary and they have a flag program. Joey has signed up all his neighbors and he and the boys put out all the flags.

Okay, turning in!!

Night all! God bless and sweet dreams!

Good morning,

Someone asked about the lower gate duty. It was okay. I shared the duty with a young man, a first-year teacher. The nurse was next to us under a canopy. Eventually, I scooted over and enjoyed the shade of her canopy. Boy, it was some kind of hot.

At the end of the day, I was holding back the remaining students waiting for those in charge to say it was time to release them when Mike, who was standing nearby, said, "What the heck, Shirley." And we released the multitude.

(Mike is another teacher who teaches just down the hall.)

That is pretty much the day.

JudyE, Darth is Judie's husband. His real name is Frank. The "Darth" has to do with the pronunciation of their last name.

stronghunter said...

Hi Thelma!! Good to see you.

good morning everyone, it is 5:02 AM PDT and I have been up for an hour. I think the birds chirping got me up, could not be that I am excited about trying out for the Dragon Boats...

Enjoy the flea market T-Bird.

Thanks for the reminders of the good view times of the ISS fly overs Magpie. I hope it clears out here so I can catch a glimpse maybe.

Hoda said...

Stronghunter I am glad the day went well and that you found shade and decided to release the kids when things were completed waiting for "the word" sometimes used to cause us a lot of problems at school because everyone was so wound up...Not many more days to go...it sounds like you have good relations with the teachers you work with also.

10-4 Margy!

Good Morning all....nice here this morning and a very cool night after the storms. Not going to be as hot today, so they are saying....

stronghunter said...

Have not heard from Susan or Rus this morning, but I am sure I would have if the storms had been bad for them.

stronghunter said...

Yes, Hoda, those of us on the front lines sometimes need to take action.

Mike, my teacher friend, was joking with the kids, saying things like, "Yeah, you can overpower us, but we'll be able to take a few of you out first." But it was hot, and everybody was tired and ready to end the day.

I think the kids had a good time, and please do not worry. They are used to Mike's teasing. He is a good guy.

I am just making a quick appearance. Off to water pots before running some errands.

Hoda, thinking of you this morning and anxious to hear your report. Hope you are not too sore after this experience!

Margy.....I am going to squeal! We have been talking about you on fb. Someone, won't mention names, put on a picture of beef t_____s. Lots of comments and things like "Don't tell Margy". And, here I am telling you. LOL Not fair to mention your name when you can not get on fb.

Lolly said...

I am now off to water pots as it is going to be yet another hot, hot day!

Have a great day! Wish I was at the beach!

stronghunter said...

I don't think I told you about the kid who showed up to my class with two and a half cases of bottled water on the BDP day.

It was much more than he could carry. He was pushing it along the floor. I asked what he was going to do with all of that water, and he said that it was really hot out there. I commented that he could kill himself by drinking too much water. Evasive, vague answers always cause me to be suspicious.

It slowly came out that he wasn't going to drink all of that water. Hmmm, so what was he going to do??? This water was going to be thrown or poured on people. I picked up the phone and called administration. Kid was summoned to the office. He was told to take the water back to his car. A security officer followed him. Also, he had to take off an inappropriate t-shirt, and while he was there, a referral arrived from another teacher. Sounds like he had a bad day.

Kid kind of reminds me of Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn. How did I find out all of this stuff? He told me with a silly grin on his face.

stronghunter said...

Yeah, I have had several conversations with this boy's mom. She is a teacher. She has her hands full!

hedgie said...

Morning all! Cool on ehere, so far...only 70°! It rained lightly most of the night.
I made a dumb mistake....had the satellite tuned to a music station and coming in on the stereo (I always sleep to it), but completely forgot that I had the DVR set to record two things at 6AM...came awake at 6:15 hearing a baby crying like crazy.....realized what had happened----if DVR is set for two things, it autoimatically changes the channel to one of them. Came down the steps as quietly as I could to turn off the stereo....but Liesl heard me and was wide awake and ready to go. Way too early!!! After letting her out and getting dressed, we went to the sofa and dozed for an hour!

hedgie said...

Hoda, wondering if you are on the water yet in the dragonboat....hope it goes well! Bet your muscles will be screaming and that you have some ibuprofen or something with you.

Worst of the weather apparently was in Northern Virginia yesterday.....my SIL was at his fire station south of Alexandria...a limb came down on his car and smashed the back window and creased the roof. Luckily he got it into the bay before the rain started! Glad it's not raining this morning so he could drive it home. Now needs to borrow someone's garage until body shop opens Monday.

hedgie said...

Paula, was your drive-time prolonged by beach traffic? THey said on the news yesterday that 336,000 vehicles were expected to cross the bay bridge this weekend!

stronghunter said...

Oh, wow, Lynn. I think it was much worse in lots of places than it was here.
