Lolly Do you think that he would fly over to the trees or are they too far.....

Lolly said...

Oh we had a fantastic meal! Jack smoked brats and grilled hamburgers. I cooked some yummy beans all afternoon. It really was fun! And it was such a pleasure to see these guys enjoy each other. Jack is the youngest, some of them are in their upper 80's. We are the only ones to get the group of retired engineers together. They were so excited to see each other.

GA-GIRL said...

I see that a net has been added to the tree under the Delta nest in hopes of avoiding the lost of the last eaglet. Lets hope that if the net is needed, that it will provide the support needed to save the life of this precious bird.

Mema Jo said...

WOWSIE Now I know why he waws being very vocal!
Adult into nest with VERY large FISH

The trees and poles are close. He will not have far to fly. Jack is guessing about 100 ft. That is just a guess.

Mema Jo said...

OKLAHOMA Eaglet feasting on his meal!
He didn't mantel like our Hidey does.
The adult left the fish and Flew Out just like our adults do the delivery and go!

I have not seen the OK eaglet branch to the pole above. Have you Jo? I remember last year they branched to it before they fledged.

Mema Jo said...

The Barn Owls on the Wild Watch cam seem to be doing great this year.

National Zoo Artificially Inseminates Asian Elephant

Veterinarians and animal-care staff conducted a series of artificial insemination procedures this week on Shanthi, one of the Asian elephants at Smithsonian’s National Zoo. A successful pregnancy is an important milestone in the Zoo’s commitment to Asian elephant conservation.

National Zoo staff worked alongside veterinarians Robert Hermes and Frank Goeritz from the Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Berlin, who conducted the insemination procedures June 3, 4 and early this morning. Scientists will now monitor the level of the hormone progesterone in Shanthi’s blood. If concentrations remain elevated past 10 weeks after insemination, it most likely means she is pregnant, which will be confirmed by an ultrasound. An Asian elephant’s gestation period ranges from 20 to 22 months.

Artificially inseminating an elephant is a challenging and difficult medical procedure, and in order for it to be successful, several things have to take place. First, the elephant must have a healthy reproductive tract. Also, the semen used for the procedure must be of good quality and needs to be placed correctly in the cervix and/or uterus. Finally, the artificial insemination must be timed properly: Elephants have two surges of luteinizing-hormone in about a three-week period. Using blood samples, scientists are able to detect when the first surge, which does not induce ovulation, occurs. The second luteinizing hormone surge, which does induce ovulation, follows about 20 days later, and that is when the artificial insemination is done.

Shanthi, who is approximately 33 years old, gave birth to Kandula in 2001. He was the fifth elephant in the world conceived by artificial insemination. Through past artificial insemination procedures done with Shanthi, National Zoo scientists collected information that led to a greater understanding of elephant reproduction. For example, National Zoo reproductive physiologist Janine Brown discovered that elephants have a double luteinizing-hormone surge, which turned out to be vital for the proper timing of the artificial insemination.

An elephant birth would bolster the decreasing population of Asian elephants in North America and is an significant step toward creating a multigenerational herd at the National Zoo. The Zoo is currently expanding its elephant exhibit to accommodate such a social grouping. Elephant Trails, scheduled to open in 2011, will feature additional space and a walking trail for the elephants, in addition to a large indoor habitat with soft flooring.

National Zoo scientists have studied Asian elephants in the wild for nearly 40 years in an effort to prevent their extinction. Fewer than 30,000 Asian elephants remain in the wild. Another 15,000 domesticated elephants are found in Asian range countries, many of them living in substandard conditions in logging camps, temples, tourist resorts and other facilities.

Keeping our fingers crossed for this to work, last time it didn't

PORTLAND OREGON RTH UPDATE...

Fledglings Successfully Returned to Nest
7:58 PM Sat, Jun 06, 2009 | Permalink
Bob Sallinger
E-mail

We returned the fledglings to the nest late this afternoon. Mom flew back and forth several times as they were being released. The youngsters scurried to the the corner of the nest as soon as they were released from their carriers and within minutes were up on the railings flapping and calling. I left a bunch of food in the nest for them (dead mice and quail) so they should have plenty to tie them over until the parents bring in food. The nest is pretty disgusting--full of all kinds of junk including bits of rubber, foam and insulation. There is even a small mirror encased in plastic that they seem to have carried in.

The fledglings by the way are a boy and a girl. They are actually pretty close in size making it hard to tell gender over the camera, but their weight and foot size are diagnostic..so we have one of each.

We watched from the ground for awhile after the release. Mom remained in the area but did not enter the nest. It may take her a little while given the strange events that transpired this afternoon. However, she will eventually
just looked and did not see them there, but there are pics on their site

latest from Lisa at BWO...

06/08/09:
In this Quicktime movie (3.3MB) we can see three chicks moving, so we know all the eggs hatched. Unfortunately we're only seeing two chicks in the feeding shots, which may mean our youngest was not strong enough to make it.

We'll try to get confirmation on the fate of the third, and we'll update the web log at that time.

paula eagleholic said...

Oops, out of view.

paula eagleholic said...

Where did the fish in the nest run off to?

paula eagleholic said...

I couldn't see 3...could see 2 though.

movin said...

I do believe I see three chicks "moving" (the whole key to this one) in the video. The third one does not stand up within the time the clip covers though.

I wish they would hurry and make another clip now that they have suggested there's something wrong.

I have a terrible time seeing the little ones at all with my naked eye this year... In fact I can't even make out that black line on their backs right now.

Preparing for another wet week and glad the yard is mowed as we would be making hay if it went another week with rain and these temps! Sorry Calvin didnt make history on Mine That Bird at the Belmont...but at least all the horses came home to the finish line safe and sound with the long ride around that track. Have a good nite to all...!

Conference call over....now we know the benefit cuts that we retirees will be hit with. Pensions are safe, but everything else either gone or drastically modified. Life's a b----, and then you die, as the saying goes.

Hi! Just quickly checking back in before typing up another keyboard drill. Boy, I have got to get more sleep tonight! I am really tired this afternoon-- maybe a gallon of coffe would help.

Sharon, your pups are SO cute! I bet they're really good company, too.

Well, back to homework! Take care, and I'll BBL. :o]

Lynn, that's true. Hubby's Grandma used to say, "It's a great life, if you don't weaken." She really knew what she was talking about!

Andrea, smart lady, wasn't she?
Good luck on your test tonight!!

Can their thermometer be right at Snowman? Only in the 40's? Moderator on conference call from Detroit said they were having lousy weather....so guess that's what she meant!

Helen, NZ weighed in with their theory about the geese downing the Hudson River plane....they were looking for grass! Whoops----should have been looking lower!

Mits said...

really, Lynn, had not seen that...guess geese need glasses:(

Lynn sorry to hear about your benefits. Such a shame that companies can do that. My mother in law worked for a meat packing place Goetzes and the owners spent the employees pension. The union went to Washington to fight it but all the money was gone.

that is just awful, Ceil
