Another sad animal phone call.. my good friend had to put her cat down yesterday his name was Poota, big black hair ball... I hope all this stops for everyone so sad
Spring trip plans in process Vicky and I are thinking of making the trip out your way the weekend of March 9 thru 11. We would like to try to meet up with ALL of you on either the (th or the 11, and head over to Blackwater refuge on March 10 for their Eagle Festival as well. Please give us some kind of feedback as to how those dates sound and whether the 9th or the 11 would be better for the Shepherdstown and surround ing area folks to be able to get together while we are there.
Sounds great to me GloBug...Well Lun Lun woke Buta Buta up with a big lickin and trying to hold her but BUta has other plans i think..lol back to sleep she went after mom gave up...
Glo & VickyI Looked at BW site: SUNDAY 03/11/06: 6th Annual Eagle Festival: Live eagle, peregrine falcon & other birds of prey, children's programs, puppet show, eagle prowls, bird walk, children's crafts, Native American programs and food all day. Sounds like quite a day! Therefore; Shepherdstown would be a Friday or Saturday. Maybe I could get some info as to the gates at NCTC being opened on that Saturday.
LOL see Mema Jo that's why we need you !!!!! Well on eof the many reasons we need you. bet I looked at an old calendar one day off to see when march 11 was. so yes, then it woul dbe Fri or Sat...whatever works out best for the most at Shepherdstown?nctc. We want to meet as many of our feathered friends as possible once we make that drive. And yes get in some Great eagle viewing too, especially of curse our eagles who should be quite busy tending a nest then, and then swing by Blackwater as well to catch their program.
I have been trying to figure out what is the white item in the upper right hand corner of our cam picture. Anyone have any ideas? I can't tell if it is up in a tree or on the ground. Is it a piece of white plastic? The mystery of the day
NILLA Ho Ho Exactly one minute after I comment on the mysterious white flowing item in the upper right hand corner - YOU DO! Great minds! No we are not NUTS!
3 eagles on the Quad city eagle cam I gave you link to in last newsletter. First time this year I have seen them on the ca,. but then I haven't had much time to watch the ca, these last 2 weeks LOL
YES actually I times I think more than 1 of us are nuts and since 2 of you brought it up wel..... Hmmm I odn't think its been there very long. Wonder if its a plastic sack blowing through or maybe the sun has caught it just right.
Nilla - Look at it on the live cam. It had looked like it was something blowing around. Maybe they put a new tin roof on something. Spidey ??? Why would he be showing up white? At night he shows up white... Now you got me thinking.
Nope no picture, haven't been snapping those lately on still cam. i am waiting for live or Still with 2 pictures. LOL It seems to have faded right away with our live cam actually hmmm
Sandra you watching Buta?????? yesss alittle moreeeee awww look Jooooooo she is trying so hardddd out back in the foot went yessssssssssssssssssssssssssss she is outttt ..lol
I am planning my tactics for when Buta is really walking and all the nest have eggs n babies and how i am going to have each cam on the screenss thank God i have 2 comps at work.. Is Buta ok she has not moved since Lun left her there?
I could see ButaButa chewing on a bamboo leaf when it first came in. They said she did it once before in one of the updates. I'm sure she'll copycat LunLun.
DC panda cams showing TianTian on the one and Mei & Tai playing on the other. If ButaButa's mother told her to stay PUT - she certainly is a very obedient little girl.
Sometimes i just wonder how people can lurk and not get excited and blog when watching the animals... Heck i get so excited my fingers dont type fast enough..lol
Ok enough excitement for today for me,, Need to go pick Rosa up and Spike my doggie grandson so we can take him to Petsmart... Today is Aalehia's 4th birthday so having her aparty... She is still on meds and goes back to hospitol in Washington the 10th... BBL from home tonight
Just talked with Mits Dr gave her many meds and she sounded a bit better today but is still hacking away with the coughing. Mits asked me to tell you that Maggie is in hospital, her pulse-oxy was lower, they say she has that RSV virus that Donna's grandkids have, please pray for her. I know all of you will offer up prayers for our littlest eaglet, Maggie.
I can't keep my eyes off the panda cam - especially when we have an MT Nest. Buta Buta just lunged at her Mother as if to say I'm coming out of that corner now and don't try to pick me up!
Hi everyone! Phew I think I'm caught up - now I remember why I was away so long - miss a day and it takes awhile to catch up - miss 5 days and it is almost impossible to catch up... I am sending prayers for Maggie - that RSV is tough on the little ones - there's a vaccine for it - most premies get it automatically before they leave the hospital... Nilla sorry to hear about your friend's kitty, glo sounds like you missed some action here while you were out lookin for eagles at your nesting areas - I have missed some of the videos you mentioned - I saw the one of Buta's steps, but what about the eagles fighting over a stick? Sharon, glad you're feeling a little better, but hate that you're in pain - I wish that I could bear the pain for you. Did the abcess arrive before the liver biopsy or after? Could it have been caused by the biopsy itself? Or are they sure the enlargement of the liver was due to the abcess? I sure hope they find out what it was and fix you up so you're 100% Sandra - we have to teach you how to open and minimize windows so you can keep track of all the action :)
Belle Lots more photos and videos include the little stick episode are on the bLOG you get to by clicking my name that is call NCTC Eagles of Shepherdstown West Virginia. There is a spot on that BLOG to sign up for the Feed Blitz which will send you an email everytime it is updated which for right now will be about twice a week. Well Sandra i guess i will need to stop by there and show ya the ropes...lol I work tomarrow and then off for 5 days...I just get so excited watching them all... Oh no my heart just sank hearing our little Maggie is in the hospitol also... Aalehia really seems good tonight, she told me her neck doesnt hurt any more so hopefully the meds are shrinking those lesions in her neck n throat... Took Spike to Petsmart he got his nails clipped and a big new bone.. Good news the vet has got Patches blood sugar down and got her to eat alittle without getting sick... Sooooo hopefully she is on the mend... brb
Thanks for the info Glo - Nilla - sounds like Spike had a good time. Glad to hear Patches is pulling through this - they are so devoted to us that they can withstand a lot...hope she continues to improve!
Hi Belle yeah but forgot to say that Spike had to pee on many things at the store so we had a roll of paper towels he really marked his territory...lol Got him out of there in a hurry..
Well it good to read some good news, some of the pets and little ones are feeling better, but sad to hear Maggie is now on the hospital. And Mits too is still quite uder the weather. Of course prayers continue for Sharon as well. OK we are 3 days into our New Healthy Year...time to all be heading up hill!
Go just had to go and watch the video of Liberty & Belle workin on the nest again i sat here and laughed at them like arguin about where sticks go... I had put that Sea Eagle link in the blog months ago here ... Its awsome to watch again Thanksss
Nilla Glad you like the video with Liberty and Belle and the stick. sorry i didn't see that Sea eagle link months ago...it is a great one. Eventaully I guess by shairng wherever with whomever, those who would love to see it, will eventually find it. it is awesome. But I don't want to think of Liberty and Belle ever having to defend a nest like that, given the saga of martha though I guess ya just never know. That's why I like it whenever I see both of them in the nest. And when I'm down by the river and I see a young one, my mind immediately goes to our 3 and where they are, if they are finding food etc etc. Will never know and always enjoy what we do know, but I do wonder!
Hi Sharon - sorry you're not feeling as well today - pay off for feeling extra well yesterday and over-doing a bit maybe, but you're getting stronger overall if you're able to get online even if not feeling the best... {{{{{{{{[hugs}}}}}]]]] hang in there and keep the positive attitude, you are doing great!
Lisa on BW Eagle Cam site has added 2 new pictures... I think we may be rubbing off on her as she has a caption of "Keep an eye on the neighbors" on the one picture.

OK Its Deal ot no Deal time I haven't seen it for like 2 weeks either. I m going to streth out on the couach and relax and try to watch the show. When I wake up I will let the dogs out quickly, fall into bed, and BLOG at you tomorrow. Good Night all. I did see a few eagles today but haven't uploaded them yet. I also go tto see Liberty and Belle in the nest late this afternoon. So good to see them both, they were busy doing their usual renovating with minor discussions about where to put that stick, blad of gras, or huge beak full of whatever they pulled out of the middle of the nest.
LOL Oh and I have to add I am so glad Sharon received her card too. I sent it Priority Mail 2 weeks ago. Good thing or it could still be out there wandering around. Hindsight says I should have sent it to her home, BUT that was nOT the decision the day we made it. She knows we all love and pray for her daily and will get her through all this together.
I've watched any cams today at all feeling too badly. Have in prayers Maggie (our sweet littlest eagle) and family, Sharon sorry for your pain (I did read comments) glad you got your card. Still continue praying for you Sharon. Prayers also for your great neice Nilla. Also keeping Mits in prayer these different virus aren't easy to get over. Maybe I'll feel up to seeing you all tomorrow. Take care..
Dana I have really been looking all day long for the Pink Kitty to show up on the blog. I am so glad you touched base with us - I pray for your health to return.
Just called Dana and she sounds terrible still... Said she is wearing long johns flannel shirt pj bottoms and a tobogan hat to bed with alot of covers... I said well guess Ed aint chasin ya around thenn.. Send prayers for her to get well and my Thelma i do miss you (((((( big hugsss))))) All i have to say is wax is a joke not real and MEANS NOTHING... BUT if setting around lurking tickles you then go for it Vicky...
Hey Nilla - thanks for calling Dana - I am glad you were able to talk to her andshare an update - but sad to she is't feeling so well... I hope she turns the corner and starts to feel better tomorrow!
Vicky - hope you're feeling better and able to join in with us to chat again soon - do you have any other pets? I know losing my kitty was so hard but having the other babies here to love helped a little bit
Ok heres a question that Sharon and i just talked about on the phone ... Does anyone know how long is it between the mating of the eagles and the laying of the eggs is... Inother words how long do they develope inside of Belle????? Prize for the anwser is a big chunk of cheese....
We all know the eggs take 30 - 35 days to hatch but never have seen the answer to the question and can hatch days aprt and are laid on different days if more than 1 egg
I haven't found that info anywheres, either, but from what it seems like w/ the Florida eagles it was anywhere from 2-4 weeks as I recall. Wasn't that one video of them mating around Nov 6 or so, and then she laid an egg on Dec 8th.
Paula love the bunny down at my daughter house there are 2 rabbits that are tame 1 white n one like yours they run all over the development.. but both are males also...
LOL - I refreshed (finally when blogger would let me) and saw the line 'no idea what develops inside of belle' and wondered what the heck are they talkin about me about?? LOL duhhhh of course you meant OUR belle, not silly me - LOL
I have gone to all the eagle sites and read the Eagle Facts on quite a few. No where do they mention a time line of mating and egg laying. They only mention the incubation time.
Still laughing Belle your ahoot... See thats what we wanted to know how long does it take for the eggs to actually develope inside before laying certainly alittle while...
I will have to check my zoology text if I can get to it downstairs in the 'office/library/storage/don't know where else to put it/toss it in here to tidy up the rest of the house' room to see if I can find any info on egg development before laying - I do know the shell is still rather soft when it passes out and that the male's contribution is stored in the female and fetilizes the egg as it passes on the way to being laid - if I am remembering that correctly. So I'm guessing that the matinig and collection of the male's sperm helps to stimulate/facilitate the egg production ....
Blog is being very slow for me tonight - not sure why, but heading to bed soon, so if I don't get back in again - sweet dreams
LOL Nilla - I'm still laughing too - it was funny how that line was the one that was at the bottom most readable spot when it refreshed - certainly caught my eye and caused a double take LOL LOL LOL
I guess noone else is having trouble with the blog pages refreshing?
11/20/06 The eagles are spending more time at the nest, and they have been observed copulating. The mating act occurs after the female indicates she is ready, and the male climbs on her back with talons folded under to protect her. Their tails are turned so the cloacae can meet, and the entire process takes five to fifteen seconds. As the time for egg-laying grows closer, the frequency of copulation will increase. They are continuing to bring in sticks and rearranging the nest to their liking.
1/02/07 The eagle pair continue to share incubating duties, exchanging places at the nest every few hours. They can be seen turning the egg(s) with their beaks, then settling down into the nest. Hatching is expected on or about January 9th.
I didn't win no steeenkin cheese yet - just tellin ya what I seem to recall from my undergrad days in college - like 25 years ago??? Can't guarantee it is correct/accurate or even close... and it sure doesn't say when, but I am gonna look too while y'all keep lookin... cause enquiring minds wanna know... lol
HAHAHAAAAAA faster than rabbits sounds like.. But interesting stuff huh see now where would you be if we hadnt brought this question up? lol in bed perhaps... now you cant slepp til the question is asnwered...lmao
Ok Paula im sure the answer is some wheres and as much as we all know about the eagles now just slippin our mind.. I am going to finish reading the news paper and watch news someone came forward to claim the million dollar prize with the ticket a woman said she couldnt take off work to go claim it today .. stop back in before bed..
Although most male birds have no external sex organs, the male does have two testes which become hundreds of times larger during the breeding season to produce sperm. The female's ovaries also become larger, although only the left ovary actually functions.
In the males of species without a phallus (see below), sperm is stored within the proctodeum compartment within the cloaca prior to copulation. During copulation, the female moves her tail to the side and the male either mounts the female from behind or moves very close to her. He moves the opening of his cloaca, or vent, close to hers, so that the sperm can enter the female's cloaca, in what is referred to as a cloacal kiss. This can happen very fast, sometimes in less than one second.
The sperm is stored in the female's cloaca for anywhere from a week to a year, depending on the species of bird. Then, one by one, eggs will descend from the female's ovaries and become fertilized by the male's sperm, before being subsequently laid by the female. The eggs will then continue their development in the nest.
I found this info which I thought was really interesting...
Whether a bird is more likely to lay a male or female egg depends on which sex will have the greatest chance of doing well. Rutstein et al. (2004) adjusted the food intake of female Zebra Finches & found that well-fed females were more likely to produce daughters, while less well nourished birds were more likely to have sons. This is exactly as predicted by the fact that female offspring need to be better nourished than males if they are to survive and grow well. The authors noted that: “In most animals sex ratio is close to 50:50 and extremely resistant to change. In mammals, including humans, the sex of the baby is determined by whether the sex chromosome in the sperm is male or female. But in birds, it is the female’s egg rather than the male’s sperm that determines what sex the chick will be. Thus the female has the potential to determine the sex of her young by whether she ovulates male or female eggs. In some way, female Zebra Finches seem to be able to exert control over whether to produce a male or female egg depending on which of the two is most likely to be successful. Our research tells us that they do it, and we understand why. The big question is: how do they do it?” In many animals, females need to be well-nourished and in good condition if they are to breed, as eggs are costly to produce. Bigger eggs tend to lead to bigger young that are more likely to survive. Such ‘sex ratio adjustment’ is well documented in certain insects, such as bees and wasps, but is less well understood in birds and mammals.
Checking back in before bed.. wow Paula you have been busy with alot of great info and insites into the breeding of birds,, Thanks for that... I do remember reading that this month they are going to start to check Mei's vaginal swabs and Tians gonads that swell up for there reproduction... LOL i didnt need any of that all i needed was few drinks of Sloe Gin and 9 months later sloe gin baby... LOL on that ill say good nighterssss
Think most of the early morning folks are sick. but i have stopped by. Think we all get to do some of that talking to ourselves at times, especially while things are a little slow. Much more action in the evenings when those from Shepherdstown are home and on though, by then for me its other stuff going on. Once there's eggs and babies we'll all be here oohh in and aahhin as usual I'm sure.

Well, I see I just missed the wax, darn! I have been napping again. Haven't felt the best today.
Hi Sharon - sorry you're not feeling as well today - pay off for feeling extra well yesterday and over-doing a bit maybe, but you're getting stronger overall if you're able to get online even if not feeling the best... {{{{{{{{[hugs}}}}}]]]] hang in there and keep the positive attitude, you are doing great!
the blog page was giving me fits for awhile - I couldn't get the page to come up
I'll say you missed it! Big Time!
I did send you an email today.. Hope to talk with you tomorrow.
To all who contributed to my get well card, I received my card today and it absolutely made my day. Thanks so much to everybody for their prayers, love, support and well-wishes. Don't think I would have made it this far without you!
Who would have ever thunk that friends of fine feathers would make such fine friends!! Love you all!

The blog made me stutter
Sharon I am so glad you have received your card.
Take care..
Dana, I am sorry you are still feeling so bad.
I miss Mits on here too. Hope everybody gets over their sickness soon!

Ok heres a question that Sharon and i just talked about on the phone ... Does anyone know how long is it between the mating of the eagles and the laying of the eggs is... Inother words how long do they develope inside of Belle????? Prize for the anwser is a big chunk of cheese....
What kind of cheese?
Now Paula thats the surprise ... wink
We all know the eggs take 30 - 35 days to hatch but never have seen the answer to the question and can hatch days aprt and are laid on different days if more than 1 egg
I'm trying to find an answer but most of the info is about incubation which we all know is 33 -35 days.
Here is my answer: After mating the first night the female stays in the nest is when the egg is laid!
I have no clue what develops inside of Belle. I need to read up on birds.
I haven't found that info anywheres, either, but from what it seems like w/ the Florida eagles it was anywhere from 2-4 weeks as I recall. Wasn't that one video of them mating around Nov 6 or so, and then she laid an egg on Dec 8th.
Thoughts and wishes for a speedy recovery for Mits, Dana, Sharon and littlest Maggie!
And all the animals, too!
well guess someone needs to e-mail our eagle expert Steve and asked him.. you know Jo the one we met the first time we went over to the nest..
I bet that the Audubon Society doesn't have a precise answer on this egg development. lol
Paula is probably right - Give her the Cheese!
Paula love the bunny down at my daughter house there are 2 rabbits that are tame 1 white n one like yours they run all over the development.. but both are males also...
Okie Dokie a chunk of Harvarti creamy cheese comes your way Paula,, heck heres some pretzels to &&&&&&&&&&&&&&
LOL - I refreshed (finally when blogger would let me) and saw the line 'no idea what develops inside of belle' and wondered what the heck are they talkin about me about?? LOL duhhhh of course you meant OUR belle, not silly me - LOL
The one video willpat had of them mating was on Nov 19
<~~~~ passin peanut butter cookies around (#) (#) (#) (#) (#) (#) (#) (#) (#) (#) (#) (#) as second prize
I have gone to all the eagle sites and read the Eagle Facts on quite a few. No where do they mention a time line of mating and egg laying. They only mention the incubation time.
RODFLMAOOOO Oh Belle thats funny i thought you had gone to bed sorry i should have clarified it.... Funnyyyyyyyyy
Still laughing Belle your ahoot... See thats what we wanted to know how long does it take for the eggs to actually develope inside before laying certainly alittle while...
Ok Paula they matted afew times didnt they?? So when did she lay the eggs?
Nilla, she laid an egg on Dec 8
I saw a link to egg laying and fertilization somewhere, but can't recall where.
How about that Belle wins to i guess tossin you a big chunk of Colby cheese Belle Niters if your leaving
Paula if your like me i surf n read n surf n read and if i dont save it or remember its gone ...
From the FL site
Can't guarantee it is correct/accurate or even close... and it sure doesn't say when, but I am gonna look too while y'all keep lookin... cause enquiring minds wanna know... lol
I hope you soon can tell me if you think Belle has an egg growing in her tummie. Til Then......
Good Night All
Pleasant Dreams & Peaceful Sleep
Prayers going up for all in need
Good Morning Suzanne
HAHAHAAAAAA faster than rabbits sounds like.. But interesting stuff huh see now where would you be if we hadnt brought this question up? lol in bed perhaps... now you cant slepp til the question is asnwered...lmao
I'm looking for it again, but it took awhile to find it the first time....
Reproduction
NO time, but this is what Belle had said...
The big question is: how do they do it?”
In many animals, females need to be well-nourished and in good condition if they are to breed, as eggs are costly to produce.

GOOD THURSDAY MORNING, EAGLE LOVERS...
Interesting description on the bird's reproductive process, Paula.
I had wondered about their techniques and had intended to research it before, but I never got around to it. Now, thanks to you, I don't need to.
I hope you are all enjoying the New Year so far...if not, have another sip of the egg nog.
Jim
Good Morning everyone. Looking for some good health news, and lots of eagle viewing today. Off to coffee and dog treats.
