Monday

New thread. Another cool one here in CT.

Update:

I have gotten some questions regarding the status of the cam, the status of upgrades, etc. I'll tell you what I know.

First off, remember that this project is a labor of love for a number of people at NCTC. We all have full time jobs that do not include doing the eagle cam work, so we all do this as an extra. We have even had some comments from NCTC staff questioning why we are even doing the project to begin with. We have always pushed past those types of comments because we do see the great value in the project.

Those involved in the Cam work have met a couple of times recently on the upgrades for the cam. We have targeted the last week in July to try and get these upgrades installed. That assumes that we are able to get everything through the contracting process, which is detailed and time intensive. NCTC is a big place and many procurments are done every day. We can't just call a supplier and buy things, there's more to it than that and deliberate moves around the process can wind up with an Inspector General officer, with a badge, questioning you :>(. We all try to do this right to avoid such a result.

The current status of the cam is still unknown to me, since I am not at work. I suspect that because of the pending repairs and upgrades, we may keep it down until we can get everything right. More on that when I am back in S-Town.

One more thing, we continue to spar with security folks in DOI who consider the cam a threat to network security. We believe their stance is wrong, but have to play the game to ensure that we can continue to work the cam in the future.

So things are happening behind the scenes and I will update you when we know more. We need to hope that we will have a successful clutch next year so all this work pays off.

Morning, Norma! No, didn't hit any deer this morning, but they were out all over the place! Saw 15 this morning. Started counting after the first 6. Don't normally see quite that many, but they were out today! Also saw 2 rabbits and 1 racoon. That's the extent of my wildlife viewing this morning. That's enough!

Morning, Sunny! Yeah, those deer at NCTC just kinda stroll around and look at ya if you're in a car. They know they're safe! So beautiful to see, too.

Morning Wanda, Norma, Suanne, Mits and Sunny. Such a geat day today, wish it could be like this every morning. Makes me miss San Diego.

I haven't looked at many cams the past few dys with company in town and my best friend moving back from Texas. Going to have 20-30 people here Wednesay. Time to stress out...

Suzanne I read that no. 4 fledged I grew very attached to that cam as I did Norfolk.

BTW it feels great not being online.

normabyrd said...

HI ROBYN----WOW!---You need a good catering service!!!---Bet you all will have a BALL!!!---ENJOY!!

Suzanne said...

Morning, MemaJo and Robynann. There were 4 kestral babies in the nest box early this morning, now there are only 3. We have really had a lousy bird season this year! Norma, maybe you're right, they're sitting on the little one, but I sure don't see him.
Parent was just in the nest in Puget Sound. Think he brought something for eaglet to eat. And that was Spirit in Kent, but he's gone now. Falcon was on the bar in PA...been there a long time, but now cam view has changed. Robyn, the Kestrals that fledged fledged Friday, and they were in the bottom nest box. The cam on top, these guys are just now getting pin feathers.

Suzanne said...

Norma, I don't see a stick, but the white I do see looks like it's the sun coming in through their entrance.

Suzanne said...

Jo, my Finland cam is still down, can't get any new pics. You'll have to keep us posted.

carolinabeachmom said...

Good morning Paula. Mama wood duck is trying her hardest to cover up all those eggs she has been put in charge of.
The Woodpedkers are darting in and out of their hole in the tree. So far no one is working under or near the nest to scare them inside.
One Kestrel baby was just playing "king of the hill"; on top of all the rest. They seem to be spreading their wings out a little more.
Birds seem to be waking up on the West Coast, but I still can't get the SC cam to work.

carolinabeachmom said...

NORMA Sounds good to me, as long as my husband doesn't come in from driving the Co. Van and catch me. I like him to think that now I'm out of school that I do something around the house. :)

carolinabeachmom said...

I just saw the woodpecker chicks leave their nest! They have been looking like they were going to do it anytime. Two just flew out. Maybe it was the mother and father; I don't know, but the hole is really quiet. I'll keep watching

carolinabeachmom said...

The Kestrel nest doesn't look good. I see three active fluffy Kestrels and one that looks ver small and just keeps laying there. I haven't seen him move at all since I have been watching. Someone take a look. I could be wrong.

carolinabeachmom said...

NORMA Me too. They are loose fitting and comfortable.

carolinabeachmom said...

MITS Very good video. Thanks for sharing. I never would have thought about the birds having trouble with them.

normabyrd said...

NE NEST---I see part of an EAGLET in the nest!!---

carolinabeachmom said...

Nothing is happening at the woodpecker nest yet, so they all must have finally flown off.Oh oh, a parent just came back and is all excited as there are no chicks to be found. it is really squaking

carolinabeachmom said...

Wouldn't you think that they would have left him/her a note as to their whereabouts? :)

normabyrd said...

CONN OSPREY----FOGGGGGGY!!---See 2 or 3 OSPREYS!!!----Counted the KESTRELS again---see about 4!!!

Suzanne said...

There is a bird in the BB nest. What is it?

Robyn said...

Norma, there will be 2 chefs here also :)shhhhhhh

carolinabeachmom said...

NORMA Look at the white fluff in the middle. It just lays there while the other three walk over it. Like I said, I haven't seen it move yet, while the others are moving all around.

Suzanne said...

Candy, hate to say it, but I think that's what's left of the tiniest chick. Hasn't moved in a while. Checked about an hour or so ago, and it was in the same place.
Geesh, hate losing all these birds! Mits, interesting article on beakspeak.

carolinabeachmom said...

OMG there is a bird in the BB nest!

MITS said...

I don't think it is a bluebird, but I think it is getting rid of the chicks, if you get my drift.

carolinabeachmom said...

Suzanne, I think you are right. We have lost another one. I didn't think one looked good yesterday; seemed to have a red spot on it where it looked as if feathers were missing.

Now watching the BB nest. Do you suppose it is the swallow checking the nest out. It didn't seem like the original parent as it has a kind of light ring around it's neck. Doesn't that tail look like a swallow tail?

normabyrd said...

SUZANNE--CANDY---The little KESTRAL hasn't moved it's head---You all are right---SUZANNE---What do you think the BLACK CLUMPS on the floor are---DISCUSSION about it this past weekend?????

Suzanne said...

Candy, I didn't think the baby kestral looked too good Friday, but I was hoping I was wrong. Not sure what kind of birdd is in the BB nest, but I'm glad someone else is seeing it besides me! It's been there for a little while. Oh, yea, could be swallow tail. Let's hope whoever decides to take up residence is successful with laying eggs, eggs hatching, and raising chicks to fledge!!! Geesh, this nest is not having very good luck this season!

carolinabeachmom said...

MITS, I sure hope that the nest gets cleaned out. Then we don't have to look at those poor babies anymore.

Suzanne said...

Didn't see the discussion, haven't read the blogs, but I'm thinking maybe they could be insect shells. Like beetle shells? Could also be part of the sawdust it looks like they're using. They sure are whitewashing the walls, so can't be that. Don't know, what did you all decide it was this weekend?

carolinabeachmom said...

SUZANNE I am with you on that. It would be nice to have a successful nest that we could watch again.

BTW when I was going through my photos, I came upon some old pics of last hears eagle chicks. I have the cutest one of them sitting side by side. I hope and pray that we will have a successful nest next year.

carolinabeachmom said...

The Kestrels have moved the dead one underneath them. I wonder if they plan on eating it. They are treating it like I saw them with the bugs.

carolinabeachmom said...

SUZANNE I had wondered of the black clumps would have been leftover bug parts, after I saw the two huge ones in there. If you look close, some things look like left over letts. I'm telling you that first one I saw plop down next to the chicks was huge and had big long legs on it.

carolinabeachmom said...

I meant leftover leggs. :(

normabyrd said...

SUZANNE----RULED OUT the EXCREMENT-----JIM & CANDY & I think some others----no answer---Then I notice today's BW OSPREY LEDGE---They point out it is the sod clumps, etc. that they bring in---KESTRELS WOULD DO THAT---OR WOULD THEY???

Suzanne said...

Time for me to hit the road. All have a good fall day! Eyes to the sky, see the raptors fly!

MITS said...

Now that you mentioned it, it did look like a swallow tail

normabyrd said...

YEAH CANDY!---Discussed insects--They would have to be very large--because the CHICKS are so small?---I just don't know---INSECTS has to be the ans.

Costume Lady said...

I also saw the bird in the BB nest and took a photo. Not sure, but it looks like a swallow. I will keep looking. Yes, it is trying to remove the babies. WOW--nature at it's worst.

normabyrd said...

carolinabeachmom said...

One chick on branch at Norfolk nest. No birds on either BW nests.
No falcons on Pa. ledge.
Chicks in nest at Kent just loafing around.
Night time in Stork land.
Chicks sitting with parent in Finland osprey nest.
The 3 Kestrels devoured the big bug;just legs left.
Limuw is done eating and bugging his parent to get off the launch limb so he can climb on. :)
One lonely barn owl in nest box, looking mighty lonely.
BB nest silll hasn't been cleaned out
Woodpecker family still out flying around. It is a good thing, as there is an awful loud noise and either the tree or the camera is going back and forth. I hope they aren't cutting down the tree!

Parent left SC nest and Limuw is on launch branch.

Anne-Marie said...

Hi everybody , today is a busy day but I take a peek every once in a while. No mom in BB nest. There are blow flies on babes. It doesnt look good. Whats going on? I too saw the swallow in the nest. If she would lift up the straw she would find hers she left in there. Very strange.

Anne-Marie said...

Mama BB came back to investigate the nest. Babes not moving. left nest. So sad.

Costume Lady said...

ANN-MARIE--
MoM & Dad BB were last seen in the nest Fri. around 2:30PM. We think there may have been a battle over nesting rights with the Swallows and the pair of BB may have been killed. The babies died sometime Fri. night. It seems the Swallows are moving in now.

Anne-Marie said...

Mercy, I thought I saw mama BB. in the nest but maybe it was a swallow. We have so very few BB in the west. Swallows are every where. What a "Blue Monday"

Anne-Marie said...

Mama BB IS in the nest. I'm watching.

Anne-Marie said...

The camera is very high but I think an egg is missing. I anly see two.

Anne-Marie said...

She moved eggs and babes. There are still 3 eggs and two babes. She is going in and out.

movin said...

Afternoon, all...
I haven't read all today's comments, but I noticed some things I want to report now.

Limuw is in his nest calling rather loudly ... probably wants some fillet of sole.

My favorite undersized Kestrel does indeed seem to have departed today... I thought he was probably at the bottom of the pile, but when the pile moved, he wasn't there this time. (Not enough food for 4???)

Bluebird nest...whatever that bird is (Bluebird or Swallow), it has laid 3 eggs so far today.

I was reading in Wikipedia on Bluebirds yesterday, and I learned that in addition to predators, Starlings and Tree Swallows, working together with others of their clan, sometimes attack and drive Bluebirds away from their nests.

Jim

movin said...

The 3 Kestrel chicks remaining are growing and growing pin feathers quickly, and at least 2 of them are doing a lot of wing exercising now.

Limuw has quieted down and is just perched on a high limb over the nest...looking a lot more at ease with his wings and himself now that he's fledged.

Jim

Hi everyone

Saturday was a nice day.

Today I put the 2 plants I got off of Megan and put in the hanging pot. Maybe we will see hummingbirds.

Had Drs. appt. my regular Dr.

Wow alot going on at the BB nest. By the comments I'm reading.

Seen what Steven wrote about the cam. :( Been there done that haven't we. I'll just pray pray pray.

movin said...

Hi, Dana, good to see you.

The Kestrel Mama just popped into the box and flew right back out again. Maybe she's going for 'take out'.

Limuw is still perched regally in the same spot.

No more eggs in the Tree Swallow (?) nest.

Mema Jo said...

Here is an email I just received concerning the bluebird/swallow cam:
Jo,
Thank you for notifying us about the blue bird cam and all your observations are extremely helpful. After reviewing the cams it looks as though the blue bird
chicks are in fact dying if not dead already. We suspect that due to the parents diligence in the beginning that some predator must have gotten the parents, various species of hawk frequent the area. We are planning to remove the nest
and deceased birds shortly so that enjoyable viewing can continue.
Thanks again for keeping up on the cams!
Jassalyn Bradbury
Wild Watch Cam Assistant

The bird going into the nest now is the swallow.

Costume Lady said...

THANKS,ONCE AGAIN JO, FOR LOOKING OUT AFTER US BY ASKING THAT THE BB NEST BE CLEANED OUT. I am glad they are not going to shut down the cam because it will be interesting to see if the swallows are successful this time in their nesting efforts.

Not doing really well with cams. Ours is still blue, BW eagle is still down, but osprey is up. Oh, Lisa has some neat pics of a Blue Heron on the osprey nest. Cool! Finland is down, there is a note on the cam, but I don't speak Finnish, so only guessing that they're telling us the cam is down. Yup, could figure that one out! PA ledge looks MT this morning, that's a first. Benicia is MT, storks are having a beautiful day over there, Kestral cam is still off for the night, and what's with the bluebird nest? There is something black in there, and two very shiny eggs. Are they our BB eggs? Anyway, nothing else on or it's still dark. May try to check blogs if I have time, but I want to get a few things done before I leave today. Don't need them to call me to come in later in the week!
All have a great eagle day. Eyes to the sky, see the raptors fly!

Oh, before I forget, Norma, I got my duck stamp in the mail yesterday. Didn't put it in a plastic case this year, so I just put this years stamp in the plastic holder with last years. Keeps them nice. If you ordered one through BW, you should be getting yours very soon.

GOOD MORNING SUZ--
How was your drive in this morning--how many deer? And, before I forget, have you gotten rid of your tomato worms yet?

Yesterday, where Steve tells us there is a new thread, he speaks of our cam and plans for it. Read it when you get chance.

Not sure what is in BB nest. It may be a feather placed there by the swallow, claiming the nest. Someone emailed Jo and told her they were going to clean out the nest and leave the cam on so we can continue to watch what will unfold next.

Suzanne said...

Morning, Wanda. Yes, I read Steven's note yesterday. Sure hope they can get the cam up and keep it up for next season. I know they don't have to do this, but they started it last year, so now they need to continue with this project. We all love it!

Normal amount of deer this morning, think around 8 or 9, 1 cat, and the racoon again. Twice I've seen him in the same place, Lucketts, VA, on the side of the road eating. Must be his home turf. Sure hope he doesn't get hit! I was talking to a guy yesterday who lives in WV and works here, and he has also seen an abundance of deer along the shoulders of the road. This is about the 3rd week in a row for this now. I don't remember ever seeing so many in the morning before.

Yes, think I got rid of the worms or whatever they were. I looked very closely (took my picture out there with me), and couldn't find any worms, but I used that Sevin I bought, and it seems to have done the trick. The flowers that had been cut are still there, but no other flowers have been cut. And they are now turning into tomatoes, so guess whatever it was is no longer. Don't like to use chemicals, but sometimes you have to. Just can't go out now and pick a tomato off the plant and eat it, I'll have to wash it first. But at least I'll have my tomatoes this year, not the critters or worms or whatevere it was!

I'm glad they're gonna clean out the BB nest and keep the cam on. Poor things. But it will be interesting to see what happens with this nest.

I know one thing that's in the BB nest...bugs. I did a couple refreshes in a row, and the bugs are the only thing that moved. They show up as little black spots, may be about an inch or so long. Whoever is gonna clean out that nest also needs to get rid of the bugs in there, or any baby birds aren't gonna make it.

Good morning so far this morning Suzanne and Wanda.

Got woke at 5:23am by my husband calling our one dog to go outside. I don't know why he does that she is deaf. Back to bed husband goes and me can't get back to sleep.

Thanks Jim about my leg. It truely is getting better. Surgery was successful and therapy has been too. Just healing time and it gets tired of being down or propped up. It just wants the bed sometimes. lol

Getting light in Kent, parent in tree watching those big babies! Cam3 is still down. Can hardly see eaglet in Puget Sound. 3 Kestrals are all huddled together trying to keep warm. Falcon on bar in PA, stork babies are standing around, parent just left. There was an owl in Benicia, but gone now. Nobody has been to visit the osprey nest yet, and the burrowing owl cams are not yet on for the day. Still dark in San Diego, so can't see any pandas.

Oh, Jo, you said something on the blog this weekend sometime, about me taking a picture of Gypsy to show you. I have taken several, just haven't gotten them put on CD yet. Not sure how she's gonna feel when I post her naked picture on the Internet, but I won't tell her! She's still just fuzzy, but very soft. Her hair is growing in very slowly!

Oh, panda waking up in San Diego. Was sleeping on a rock, but moving around now. It's 4:42 there.

Heidi, you said something about seeing Bette Midler! I LOVE her!!! I love her song The Rose, she sings it's beautifully!!! Wow, that will be so cool to see her in person. Lucky you!!

Suzanne said...

Well, crap! My panda cam just went down. Maybe they're changing pandas and cams. I hope that's all it is.
Dana, good luck with SC, I hope you get it up!

Suzanne said...

Panda cam came back, that was nice of them! Our Puget Sound eaglet is standing looking over the side of the nest. Probably wondering what's waaaaaaayyyyy down there? Kent eaglets Albert and Einstein are just hanging out, parent is gone from tree. BW osprey still MT, Benicia MT, Falcon ledge MT, storks are hanging out, parent left, and the Kestrals are all huddled together. I don't blame them, it's chilly outside. Hum, chilly outside, FREEZING in here! I'm gonna have to bring one of my throw's in and wrap that around me just to keep half way warm in here this summer! AC is going full blast, and it's not that hot out!

Suzanne I finally got it after all this time. Oh well won't get to watch for that long. I'm happy for the little time though ( :

Limawu is sitting there just looking around. While all the birds chatting around him. With his blue tag on.

WOW !! Suzanne a longgggg weekend Have a GREAT ONE!!

Hi Mits at the Beach give a dolphin a hug (that is in thought) for me.

wvgal_dana said...

Limuw just flew up into the nest edge few seconds ago. He is just looking around.

wvgal_dana said...

Mits it's getting closer and closer for Mei. Hope this one (if she is) doesn't hit the wall. Certainly didn't affect Tai though. He has been a great Panda cub for the world to watch.

Suzanne said...

LOL, too funny! Mits if you give a dolphin a hug for Dana, you better have somebody take pictures of that! We'd sure all love to see those pics!
Dana, glad you finally got SC up and running! You better go to the beach and give Mits a dry towel!!

wvgal_dana said...

Hey Suzanne I'm not letting Mits off the hook at the beautiful ocean. She knows I love dolphins. So I'm putting in the BIG order lol....ok dry towel sent to Mits lol

I sat outside yesterday on the porch for awhile. High very high up in the sky. Where two birds large just soaring way up. No way to tell. So I just sat there for a long time playing a game with my mind. Thinking "oh such beauty to watch eagles/eaglets two of them". Could have been. I certainly was entertained ( :

wvgal_dana said...

Limuw seems to be eating something. At first I thought he was just pecking at sticks. But he is pulling meat from between his talcons. Good for him!

Suzanne said...

Sounds like you had a good day yesterday, Dana. They may have been eagles, who is to say?

wvgal_dana said...

Light is just shining through the leaves at Kent. Beautiful pic

Mema Jo said...

Good Morning you early risers
Beautiful here in the valley today.
Going over to check out some cams..

Mema Jo said...

Really need your shades on to see Kent
Burrowing owls out on the hill in full force.
I think that Tai has fallen asleep on his grate.
Limuw enjoying his morning at the nest.

Suzanne said...

Wow, good morning, Jo. You're up early!
Think there was a food drop off at Kent. Parent back in tree, and looks like one of the eagles has something in his talons. He does, but no idea what it is. Other one is looking and watching. Which is Albert and which is Einstein, anybody know?

MITS said...

Ok, Dana, dolphins waved to you...a group just swam by, and you could see the younger ones small dorsel fin, learning how to swim in circles, to get the fish stirred up and easy to catch...a bunch of mehaden swimming close to the beach, but the dolphins ignore them.

MITS said...

Yes, everything is on high alert at the zoo, just in case. They have kicked us voulunteers out of the panda kitchen and moved us to a room at the visitors center.:(:( Anxious for my next shift next Wednesday, because it is also meeting night.
