Sunday

New thread.

I have gotten inquiries from folks about getting more info on what's going on and also requests that the NCTC do something to assist the birds.

I need to repeat that we all understand that this episode is unsettling to everyone, but it is one of the risks of having the cam in place--you get to see the wonderful things and the not so wonderful as well.

Wild nature is not always a happy place...the best thing to do is not to interfere in any way.

FWS biologists have been aware of this episode since it began and I suspect there will be more information put out tomorrow on the official cam website.

Hello Judy B So glad that you and all the others on your blog are right here with us. It is one sensational learning that we are experiencing and I sure hope the biologists take heed.
Thanks for being here with us!

just back from supper(with no kitchen, hard to cook.)

someone mentioned orange vodka. I had a citrus martini. Just needed a drink today.
My hubby has a huge heart and listened to me babble about what had happened.

I will stick around, here, but I will be off and on.

I hang ,usually at BCATW , but have been amiss there lately. Life gets in the way and I knew with our falcons returning end of March, I will have no life. They are a great group of people also.

And even though I am a retired teacher, I mis spell on the computer constantly. I hit send before I correct.

This has been quite the day and I hope Trudy moves on.
Belle will certainly be stronger.
Thanks for the great write up of the day at the nest.

I could then visualize what Belle was looking at. I was glad to hear that Belle and Liberty hung together.

God Bless everyone here and Belle and Liberty and our wee Paddy Joy.

I hadn't checked in since earlier today, and I just received my daily momster e-mail. I know that if someone were to ask me right now why I'm crying my eyes out, that nobody would understand. But you all do. I don't spend much time here, and I seldom comment, but I do follow what's going on, and I still love Belle, Lib, and family. God Bless you all.

Hello

I just wanted to say thank you to all the posters, watchers on the ground and anyone else involved with this site/blog. My BF and I have been watching this eagle cam for the past 3 years and today was totally heart wrenching. I still have tears in my eyes...didn't know it would be this hard although we were told. Even BF had to walk away, and he's not one to show his sorrow.

This truly is one big loving family that I felt like I was a part of today. As sad as I am, I cannot help but to keep checking back. I don't know why because it is still killing me right now. I guess with time the healing will come.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you as well as Liberty and Belle. God bless and again, thank you.

Hi folks I am back.

I've had the whole afternoon to try to muddle through my feelings of the events of the last three days, particularly this morning's.

Even though I'm in the wild bird rehab field, and I deal with these things a lot more often than most people, I have not become completely inured to the pain it causes to lose an animal.

I'm so glad I have you, my friends, to help process the feelings and talk about the future of the nest.

I see our Belle is sitting on the nest this evening. It's 8:49 pm PST right now.

Donka Maria said...

I am so saddened by today's events, I haven't spent much time on this site this weekend. I turned 50 on Friday and my Honey, John has treated me like a queen the whole weekend. Today he planned a surprise Birthday Party for me that was absolutely wonderful. And yet I still couldn't wait to get back home because my heart was with Belle and Lib and Paddy O Joy. I was in awe that Belle was feeding POJ in the manner she was, I never would have imagined the fluid feeding I was witnessing. I had hope that things would turn out well. I was with you for the noon group prayer, but was getting ready to leave and was feeling a little better to get out of the house and enjoy the day.

When I returned this evening I read with excitement that "Belle has a FISH", which quickly turned into heartache, as I couldn't believe POJ had expired, s/he was so strong, how could that be??? So I write this with a very heavy heart and many tears have been shed.

Thank you to all of you, old and new to the site who sat vigil and shared their sorrow and anger and words of wisdom. Thank you all who went to the NCTC campus and gave us blow by blow descriptions. What a wonderful experience to get to know you all and I share in your sadness and sorrow.

This is the first day of spring and with each spring comes new life, renewal and the promise of warm tomorrows. Yes nature is cruel and we've seen it at it's best and worst. Lib and Belle will survive this I'm sure. It is so reassuring to know that Belle ate. I couldn't watch her mourn, it was too upsetting just reading all the emotion going into this blog this evening. But she has eaten and Lib is near and hopefully everything else coming from this will be a positive turn and we will go on. I just want them Belle and Lib to stay here where they belong and hope the cam stays up and running for all of us that want to watch and learn from these beautiful, magnificent eagles.

One last not, I just want to say God Bless you little POJ and God Bless all our creatures (even the Hussy) may she move on an find herself a place of her own to claim. And God Bless all of you for your kindness and compassion and your tender words. I am truly blessed to know you all.

And of course I have all you fine people to commiserate with :)

NCSuzan said...

For those of you experiencing their first tragedy at their nest do not leave this nest. See Lib and Belle through their tragedy. There will be other seasons and you will be blessed with other eaglets, other snow storms, not all eggs hatching, etc. It all makes for a true relationship I feel. The people here are good people and they care like nobody's business and will encourage you. The eagle community is tight knit and news travels fast. "Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all"

Bird Girl said...

NCSuzan, you are correct.

The core group of us have been watching since the cam went online, or shortly thereafter (me included).

People who are new to the blog generally don't know about our community, our sense of togetherness, and how much we have all bonded over this pair of eagles and their trials and tibulations.

We always welcome new people, of course. We made sure it was posted on the forum at Outdoor Channels, we have nothing to hide. We can be protective of our own, but we respect others' right to his or her own opinion.

People just coming to this nest for the first time certainly never expected for this to be what happens, but it is happening all over North America in other eagle nests, we just can't see them.

We all carry each other, support each other, and console each other. I doubt NCTC had any idea that two eagles would create such an amazing "family"!

NCSuzan said...

BirdGirl, you are exactly right!

Bird Girl said...

Think I'll sign off for today...the sun will still rise in the morning, and Belle and Liberty will be one day closer to a new nesting season, which will hopefully be much better.

Liz said...

I've been watching Belle for an hour, she appears to be resting well and sleeping. Her head tucked into her wings. It sounds very windy. May chick rest in peace. and may egg 2 hatch!

Costume Lady said...

Belle finally looks to be relaxed enough to sleep...sweet dreams Momma. Don't mourn your loss for too long, and we will try not to also. These words must surely have been written for your precious baby:

For to His angels He's given a command
to guard you in all of your ways'
upon their hands they will bear you up,
lest you dash your foot against a stone.

And He will raise you up on eagles' wings,
bear you on the breath of dawn,
make you to shine like the sun,
and hold you in the palm of His hand.

Paddy O'Joy, we only had you for a short while but we loved you even before you were born. We looked forward to watching you grow and learn to fly and fledge but it was not meant to be.
Now, the angels will watch you and teach you all that you need to know. One day when you learn to fly, I hope your spirit will visit us...we won't see you, but we will hear your wings as you soar overhead and we will know it is you.
Rest In Peace, sweet baby♥

Geula said...

Hqw amazing that there are 1051 comments! Have we ever had something like that in one day?

Well, yesterday I just couldn't face the present situation so I sort of just looked at the blog a few times to get an idea of what was going on.

I also had a visit from a different cable company to connect us to their satelite disc. Actually, the disc on our roof is not as noticable as the ones on other roofs. This change is very demacratic here on the kibbutz! First we weighed the pros and cons of both companies, then voted on which one to take...so the majority rules!

Lori O. said...

Good Morning Geula & Robyn.

Belle is now sleeping with her head tucked into her wings.

Lori O. said...

An odd picture of Belle this morning. It appears she's sleeping vertically though still with her head tucked between her wings. Her tail feathers are pointed down, too, indicating she's not horizontal on the nest like normal.

I've never seen her do this before.

Robyn said...

Now that you mention that Lori I see it too

Lori O. said...

I did take a screen capture of Belle sleeping in this different position.

Good Morning - IT'S A NEW DAY!

Lori O. said...

Are you SURE this is Belle? Feathers seem too light in areas and was sleeping oddly last night as posted above. Trudy has a flat tail like Belle's. Infrared is to bright now to show marks on head.

floralgirl said...

This is Belle, that was trudy who just flew in and attacked her.

Lori O. said...

I could be totally wrong, willing to risk it, but I've seen Belle for many hours in this lighting and her shoulders do not have that much white on them. Hef wings make a more lacy pattern and aren't so dark brown and white mixed.

floralgirl said...

Getting light here now, Belle is watching, trudy probably landed in a tree nearby.

floralgirl said...

I'm fairly sure this is Belle- Maybe she looks different cause it has been pouring and her feathers have moisture on them. I have no doubt Belle is not going to let trudy into her nest, if this was trudy, Belle would be attacking her to get her out. Are you giving me permission to call you wacky? Oh the possibilities:)

floralgirl said...

That was a pretty intense attack, trudy came in quickly, and lunged right at Belle- it had just stopped pouring, and was still fairly dark, looks like it will be another long day for Belle.

Lori O. said...

You wouldn't be the first! Besides we have a lot in common Megan. :)

Lynne2 said...

Lori, Belle's wet, and the rain water beads up on the feathers which have a coating of oil on them (they have an oil gland at the base of their tails an when they are preening in that area, they are actually spreading the oilz) The beaded up water on her will reflect light and make some of the areas look lighter than usual as you are seeing.

floralgirl said...

Yes we do:)
Good morning Lori, Margy, Rocking Circle, DanaMo and Lynne.

ROCKING CIRCLE R said...

Good Morning DanaMo--nice to see you here. Margy--is a nice article and sums up how I feel about these wonderful creatures.

Lori O. said...

Megan - during the air battle between Trudy and Belle yesterday afternoon -- Belle was headed toward the river, and Trudy was flying higher and towards the entrance - is that right?

Because in the picture, the eagle heading to the river (just can't remember who is who) has her legs extended down and talons out and looks like she's trying to stop - is absolutely verticle...the eagle (Trudy?) going towards the enterance was "not engaged for battle."

Christine said...

I wonder if Trudy also lost her baby(s) and that is why she is trying to get Belle's nest? Just thinking on-line....didn't sleep much for worrying about her.

floralgirl said...

Lori, if I recall right, at least twice we saw Belle flying like that- one time when Belle came from the river direction towards trudy she had her legs down like that, and went right at trudy in the air.

Lori O. said...

Thanks! I always say next time I'm going to "episode card" my pics like they do for TV scenes, so I know.

Last night I dreamed of eagles all night. They were very odd dreams. Needless to say, in my dreams I was going to tell you exactly what happened to poor PJ's body:(

Sad Morning to all, Just saw Belle fly off of nest, when will she fgure out that her babies are not coming back to her.Does anyone know if she will lay another clutch this year or is she done for the year

paula eagleholic said...

Huminbird, IMHO I don't think this pair will lay another clutch this year.

I don't know how long she will tend to the nest...we will have to watch and see.

wvgal_dana said...

Something lamded in tree cause it just shook.

Morning, all. Wow, just when I thought the drama was over, now we have a renewed attack by the ... I'm not even going to dignify that bird with a name.

Does anybody know how or if we will hear from specialists in this area? I remember reading somewhere that today some of those people may have something to say. Then again, maybe I dreamed that.

I just don't understand why this bird is so determined to take over the nest. The season is over for brooding (sorry if I don't have the right verbiage). Anybody have any thoughts?

I guess I'm just trying to make sense of this horrible event.

Hugs all around. Hang in there, everybody.

grannyblt said...

Right now I am glad that we don't have a closer view. Sad time for all of us.

Belle still gone from nest.

wvgal_dana said...

Belle calling out her pain from the top or branches of tree.

Harbinger said...

I'm at my office so the sound is off and am just checking back periodically.

My mind is just not on my work today.

paula eagleholic said...

Kathi, I don't think you'll get any better explanation than what we already know...it's a female/female battle for the nest.

hedgie said...

I have not caught up yet......but Belle just brought in a fish and is eating. Lori had some pics of her nicely tucked during the night. I hope her heart is healing.

Rained here off and on all night an d still today. But first thing this AM, I heard and saw quite a display of bickering between 3 pileated WP's and a crow. It was quite amusing!! Love those pileateds even tho' they are so destructive! They do NOT discriminate between living and dead trees.

wvgal_dana said...

By the way I never did on the blog. Thank "Margy" for the phone call yesterday. Since I and some other regulars on here had to be away from home for awhile on Saturday. The phone call was so that when we got home and pulled up the blog. We wouldn't just be walking into hearing about Paddy O'Joy.
"Margy my I sincerely appreciate the HARD job you had of calling each one of us. You are always a cheerful and up beat person. So it was not an easy phone call for you to make I know that. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your love."

wvgal_dana said...

Morning Hedgie-Lynn she must not have them up yet. Her blog site say's "working on a site for Liberty and Belle".

hedgie said...

Jo, I KNEW that Jewels was Caro as soon as i saw it....just hadn't seen that she had posted! LOL! I was that far behind!

Saw your ♥♥♥'s from last night.....sweet, but sure hope that Spunky and Palmer are alive and well!! Of course, we will never know. Have to keep in mind that 50% of hatchlings do not reach adulthood. :(

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

I am wearing my Spunky shirt today. I wonder what happened to Todd Harless that took these marvelous pics from 2006?

wvgal_dana said...

Lynn-Hedgie I seen were she was in as Jewell.

I am going to have to make a "cheat sheet" for the newcomers myself. Of course for Jewll I know who she is.

I hear the geese.

wvgal_dana said...

Sharon you got a "spunky shirt"? Does it only have spunky on it???

Bob Quinn said...

My heart goes out to everyone on the board. Nature can be very cruel. While eagles have been making a great resurgence, this nest has seen more than it's share of challenges. I suspect Lib and Belle will get beyond this before their loving following do. Here's hoping the next clutch has better luck, whether that is this year or next.

IrisF said...

to inject a little humor here - -
Genie is Jewell and
Jewels is Carolyn

Someone please if you have a list (cheat sheet) would you share it with me??? I know I'm lost at least part of the time, but it's gotten out of control here.

hedgie said...

Intruder just dove into nest, right over egg cup. HUSYY! Belle came an d chased her out FAST and furiously. So drama is NOT over, just as we suspected it wouldn't be. ARGH!

floralgirl said...

fight in the nest, trudy flew in and Belle was right behind her, pushed her out of the nest. Belle calling out, sounded like trudy landed up in the tree.

IrisF said...

Another altercation in the nest
Looked like intruder came in first and Belle right on her heels and dispatched her right quickly!!

PammySue said...

I turned the camera on just in time to see that little confrontation. Give her what-for Belle!

wvgal_dana said...

That I think is Liberty in nest and I think Trudy came in and they battled. Lib still there.

wvgal_dana said...

Pam I'm not sure if that is Belle or Liberty.

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

Dana, I just put a picture of my shirt on Facebook and tagged you in it.

mariadangeloart said...

Intruder still around. She just landed on the nest while Belle was away. Got a good look at her. She has a couple of dark feathers on her head. Belle flew in and chased her off. So sad. She's still staying with her dead baby and egg....

Red said...

Belle just dug a hole in the nest cup. Is she going to bury Patty?

MicheleB said...

Trying to catch up a bit this morning. Had a long night with a wheezy kid - spring has sprung.

Got to see just the end of a little scuffle with the intruder. Boy, I wish she'd leave. Belle is digging in the cup. Looks like things have been moved around a bit since last night. Looks like another fish at 4 oclock? Glad she is getting food.

floralgirl said...

She's still very alert, no doubt trudy is close by.

Genie said...

May I please be included in your list of people who would like the "cheat sheet". I know most, but am occasionally confused. Thanks so much.

wvgal_dana said...

Hi Red I don't know what the hole is for. I wasn't sure at first if that was Liberty or Belle. I see the slight wound on beak so it was Belle that fought off Trudy. Belle is in nest now. Don't know why she dug that hole. Maybe just digging around egg cup. Maybe she will put fluff over egg and Paddy O'Joy. I just don't know. This is all still new remember so we will watch and see what goes on and learn.

Quoting Paula's comment from above today:

I don't know why that hussy needs a nest...she doesn't even have a mate. Does she think Liberty comes with the nest?? NO WAY!!

PammySue said...

So, that might be Liberty? Unless they turn around so I can see how broad they are across the back, I have a hard time telling them apart.
I take it as a good thing (if it is him) cause that means they are now able to work together to drive Trudy away.

IrisF said...

Anyone else having trouble keeping the live Cam up today?

hedgie said...

Interesting article, Paula. Haven't heard of that Gannon person before.....and they post info via TWITTER????? Don't think we were ever told that. Of course, I don't have it or use it but a little advertising to that effect might have been nice for people who do.

paula eagleholic said...

Kathi, forgot to post earlier...this is where NCTC will post any "official" updates.

paula eagleholic said...

I see Belle got another fish, good for her. More strength for her to chase off Trudy.

wvgal_dana said...

Paula are you here?

MicheleB said...

That is a great article. I posted it on my facebook page.

paula eagleholic said...

Belle off to the right

paula eagleholic said...

FYI, at one point yesterday, when Belle was soaring above the nest, and Trudy returned from the West, Belle and Trudy were very close in the air...at one point Belle had her feet down...looked like she was ready to talon Trudy at any moment.

Lolly said...

Good morning! Have been watching and reading the blog. As usual, it has taken me forever to catch up.

Maybe Jo can furnish us all with a cheat sheet. I know I am too confused to construct one. LOL

Glo, I loved it.."retail therapy".☺
I think I may try a little of that today myself. Have a doctors appointment and then will go to a nursery. One had herbs on sale. My thyme made it through the winter or at least some of it did. Need more thyme!!!☺

Lolly said...

So, Paula...they never were in actual contact yesterday?

Lolly said...

Seeing the fish in the nest right now is rather heart breaking. So happy that Belle has had more food, but at the same time it is so ironic.....just saying.

wvgal_dana said...

Genie sorry I am slow this morning. Well is should be expected. Hello and nice to see you in here. As to the "cheat sheet". If someone makes one up keep in here so you will know. Then you can have it email to you. OK?

paula eagleholic said...

No physical contact in the air yesterday.

Genie said...

Dana, ok...thanks

Mema Jo said...

Good morning all - reading comments
but I'll never catch up with blog.
Article in the Daily Mail from Charleston WV really is well written and says a lot in 2 columns.

I feel we are at a peek of combat for
the nest. Stay close everyone.

IrisF said...

I had to reboot, how long has Belle been gone?

bev. said...

I just wrote a long comment and it was not accepted.????

Anonymous said...

Does anybody have any photos of the encounters with the intruder? I refuse to even give it a name anymore. (Am I bitter? Yes!)

Thanks, Paula, for that link. I see there has been no mention at the official site of Paddy's death, though.

signgirl said...

I too love the eagles. I cried with everyone yesterday. I feel like i have lost apart of my family. Now the drama continues for poor Belle. I have watched the eagles since Heidi. Never felt the need to post on the blog until now. I need to be with you and your great support network. I need to feel the love after the loss of P O J!

mariadangeloart said...

Do any of you know how long this battle over territory can take? Is it easier now for Belle and Liberty to fight her off since they don't have offspring to care for? The intruding eagle seems to be young since I saw her this morning in the nest and she has a couple of dark feathers on her head.... Is she actually trying to take over the nest at her age or is she just confused?
Thanks for any answers....

I'm supposed to be getting ready to leave with my husband and I am stuck to this computer again!

I don't want Belle to get hurt! I want "her" to go away!

Did anybody else have trouble getting that article DanaMo posted? My web browser didn't like the link. :(

hedgie said...

I will work on a cheat sheet and distribute it through momster mail. It may take a day or so. And don't have info on many newbies, but a few. Genie and Iris....so glad you both have come back in to the fold! Wonder where Carol is?? If she knows at all about all of this angst??
Don't remember if Margy said she called Norma, or did Sharon do that?? Duh! SO MUCH info my brain is fried!

Jenny, I have the Parade article....haven't read it yet. Used to read Parade first thing, but it has beocme a dummied-down publication with usually very little of interest. Big disappointment to me---insult to my journalistic self.

Good morning, everyone. I have a few questions, I hope you don't mind. Have any of you ever witnessed or heard about an intruder hanging around this long, and if so, what was the outcome? Do you think Belle will continue to defend the nest for as long as the intruder is still present, or will she and Liberty leave when it becomes apparent that the remaining egg is not viable and they will not try again? Do they remain in the area when they leave the nest? Also, and I hope this insn't too sensitive, do any of you know what happens when an eaglet dies in the nest? Will it be left there once the parents leave the nest? Thanks so much!

paula eagleholic said...

Oh crap! Intruder in the nest, sounds like Belle is above

MicheleB said...

Isn't that the hussy in the nest!?
