Sunday

New thread.

I have gotten inquiries from folks about getting more info on what's going on and also requests that the NCTC do something to assist the birds.

I need to repeat that we all understand that this episode is unsettling to everyone, but it is one of the risks of having the cam in place--you get to see the wonderful things and the not so wonderful as well.

Wild nature is not always a happy place...the best thing to do is not to interfere in any way.

FWS biologists have been aware of this episode since it began and I suspect there will be more information put out tomorrow on the official cam website.

I've been home from GG's for 45 mins. now and have not seen Joy move. I think she was injured when the Hussy tried to take over this morning. Has PJ moved around much since then?

Lolly said...

OMG! Belle, you just are not going to give up or stop protecting are you. I imagine that Big Fat Hussy is back in the area.

I would love to see her up and the baby actually move.

Trudy is still up there. You can see Belle ruffle her feathers.

CostumeLady, we are afraid that PJ is has now passed. No movement in about 2 hours.

Wanda, after Belle stepped on her she acted ok, and even fed. I think she just got too weak. It has been almost 2 hours, she has been uncovered and she has not moved one bit.

Belle brought in a fish, ate a bite or two and then just sat for the longest time with the fish in her talon. She would just look at PJ.

Well with Trudy still around Belle is still in the defensive mode.

Belle is back on the nest? This is just too sad for words. Do you think she believes PJ is okay, or could be still trying with the other egg? Is the fish still there?

Oh, Dear Lord, not after all this time...

Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.

And we named him Paddy O'Joy...Rest in peace, our dear little one.

Hello everyone. I realize this is a horrible time to be joining the conversation. But I've been fascinated for days and I've found this blog more informative and easier to follow than the one at the Outdoor Channel. I posted a few times on there as Michele in WV. My son's preschool has been watching the webcam and I got interested right before the hatch.

I haven't been watching since this morning though. Was keeping hope that Belle has been able to give nourishment to PJ. Sounds like the stress has been too much. Very, very sad. I have learned so much so far, though, and I plan to keep watching.

glo said...

Going to go fix a cup of tea and relax with Dex for a bit. I will be back shortly though I promise. We can't leave the Blog totally silent today. I agree we all need each other. I am sorry but I hope the owrst is over. I want Belle to leave and I would agree the cam off.

Ms Bookworm said...

Hi, Everyone,
I have been trying desperately to catch up on reading the blog.

At this point, I just don't know what to think. If PO'J is indeed gone, then my heart is broken. Belle has done such a valiant job of trying to keep that baby alive. Now I don't know whether she doesn't yet know her baby is gone, or whether she is trying to hatch the other egg, or whether she is just in defensive mode, and running on pure instinct.
In any case, God bless her! I don't think I can watch any more. I'll be back here later. I love all of you!

NatureNut said...

I can't watch anymore either, but I know I'll find out from comments. I'm tearing up w/out looking at cam!
God Bless Paddy & Lib and Belle. They did all the best they could.

Lolly said...

Hi Michele and welcome to the blog. Will be hard lesson for little ones to learn. Nature is rough and can be very hard to understand.

On this blog we try to help each other learn. We are caring and supportive.

I am hoping with you Sharon.

IrisF said...

Margie, you are indeed the perfect person to write to the E-M's. You always find the right words.

We do need to remember that this pair don't leave the area once nesting season is over. They are year round residents. Don't know if they use the nest at all during the rest of the year - until time for nestorations, but in this circumstance I would think they will be defending this nest for awhile. Seems like our "intruder" just won't let up. Maybe now they can convince her/him it's time to leave.

Mema Jo said...

Michele it is a hard lesson at such young years where death I hope is a stranger. There are other

I lost it so bad and a friend called and brought me to my senses for a minute! I hope that if POJ has passed on, that the cam be turned off for now. It is just so hard to believe this turn of events. It would be some easier to bear if that fish wasn't laying there. Just too late I reckon.

kittenface said...

I have been reading and crying right along with all of you Sharon you are amazing I am praying that you will be the one out of a million that is right You all have help so many people in this time of greif I hope you all know how very much I for one have appreciated this wonderful place

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

I haven't been able to watch another eagle cam since this all started, maybe later. I do love the NBG cam, just couldn't stand to watch it lately.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

I guess Trudy is back. She needs to just go on!!

MicheleB said...

Yes, I agree. He only goes to school MWF and Friday they had a field trip. I showed him the chick on Thursday and he hasn't seen or asked anything since. They have also been watching a bear cam, so I'm sure the teacher will be switching that on for this week.

Thanks for the welcome. Just FYI, I'm not a "stir the pot" kind of person and I'm an optimist through and through. I've checked a couple other eaglecams but I feel connected to this one since it's in WV.

Lolly said...

(((Hugs))) Kittenface.

Bev, I am right there with you. Have not even seen the 3rd eaglet at NBG. Have not even been watching Lily and Hope.

And, right now I can not get a thing done. I keep thinking...what if? But in my heart I know. We watched for two hours and that poor little thing did not budge.

floralgirl said...

I so hope they do not turn the cam off. This is hard to watch, and this is not the outcome we all wanted, but I still want and need to see what happens.

Belle is still fighting for her nest

Robyn said...

As hard as this is for most if not everyone, Belle and Lib would not be able to protect their territory with the caring of an young one. I believe we would be more heartbroken if our residential eagles were uprooted for another, sure some would come around to accepting her and new mate but we would not be as fully invested would we?

I am heartbroken we lost the wee one but survival is vital for our raptors and this is going to quite interesting and a learning experience for all of us since OUR favorite pair is fighting for their home.

The intruder has some chutzpah invading as she did now it is up to Belle to get rid of her once and for all.

Hugs to all but I don't want to see the cam going down, not yet anyway

bev. said...

I will continue to watch

If our wee one is gone and the egg is not viable, Belle will have a better chance at defending herself.

I am with you Sharon.

Belle will not give up her nest.

I am still praying.

I know you all are right about not turning the cam off, guess I lost my head for a minute. Just can't bear to keep seeing that little body laying there.

I saw Belle step on her this morning when Trudy was there. Reckon something happened then? She was moving after that, I saw her and she seemed unphased by it.

MicheleB said...

Bev & Robyn - I was thinking the same thing. Maybe Belle and Liberty can team up and move this intruder out once and for all.

What are the chances of the 2nd egg still being viable now? Is it now too late to lay another?

Thanks.

2 thougths after my tea. Since many of you want to see what happens I hope tomorrow they will at least take the zoom off. I am sorry but its too much info and could actually get worse. Lynne2 warned us of this soon after we sort of came to accept that our wee one may not have gotten the fish in time. It won't effect me visually as of course anyone can choose to turn their cam off.

My guess is the cam stays on. No guess on the zoom.

My second thought is

I am very glad we name our eagle family I am glad this one was named within hours or was it minutes of the hatch. Those who are here will never forget the little eaglet of 2011 named Paddy O' Joy. And the fight her Mama waged to care for her while she was in this world.

Hi everyone. I posted earlier but didn't see it when I was wading through all the posts.

Sharon, I want to hope along with you. Continued prayers going up from here.

Though it doesn't look promising for our Paddy O'Joy, I think this has been very educational for all of us and hope the cam stays on.

Belle is still making those mournful sounds and not sure I can stay much longer.

Thanks again to our ground watchers.

Off topic......
Is there anyway to "lure" eagles into an area? I would LOVE to see a mating pair locally (in Ritchie County, WV). Would seem like the area would provide what they would need (wide open spaces and a lake nearby).

I've done my best with your encouragement, to compose a message on E-M.
I meant to include on there, but did not, that Jo had talked to Paula, and the two of them gave me the go-ahead...know that it could have come better from them, but I called on my best Momsters Love to do what I could...

If you can't get to E-M and want it sent to your own email, please send a messsage to me via email and I will copy it over like that

I, too, hope that the cam stays up, we need to be here for the Royal Pair ♥ ♥

Even though my heart is heavy, I do not feel I can dessert this Pair.

I have had(well I guess not had to) to witness many falcon fights at our sites , but I did so , so I could go and rescue if need be.

those that follow falcons also will remember the famous Mariah from Rochester . If the observers had not been there and witnessed the fight, they would not have been able to save her.

I am praying that will not happen here.

I am over emotional at times but cam watchers have saved many a raptor.

I will have to go and help in kitchen soon, bu twill keep cam up.

Are there still ground people there. thanks to the many thast were.

Belle is now looking out to 1

There has been in previous years, an active Eagle Nest about five miles downstream from NCTC according to friends of mine that live down near Bakerton along the Potomac...

MicheleB - could happen, in your area....with the increased Eagle population, especially if you are near a good freshwater source
Best wishes on that...you are definitely pretty far away from us here in the Eastern Panhandle

I do not want to even read the info from those who do watch. So maybe a zoom will help that a little. :-( Its all so stinkin tough to deal with and many to think about here indeed. Oh I do know that I can NOT watch. That part I have down. It is what it is and my choice.

Here's the thing, this is nature, at it's finest, and it's worst. For me, it has been heartbreaking and fascinating to see what has happened here the past several days, and I need to know the outcome of it all. All of it- good or bad, visually unbearable or not. That's just me, sorry, and I understand not wanting to see that, and that's okay. But if the plan is this is nature in it's raw form, and we are to observe it, than again, I want to see it all play out. To not know would be worse for me.
Belle is calling out again.

Hello, all. I am so saddened by all of this. I got home from work and was able to see Belle had arrived with a fish.... Then I sat in agony with you all as we prayed and begged God to wake little Paddy. I burst into tears after the 30 minutes was up and finally decided to go to bed and catch up on my sleep. When I awoke a little while ago, I wanted it all to be such a bad dream, but it wasn't.

I promised myself I wouldn't cry anymore but I broke my promise. Life is so unfair at times.

I agree with many of you that we are lucky that Belle and Lib have survived this ordeal. That is paramount. But what a price poor Belle paid.

I agonize over now being able to hear her sad cries. It's like she's crying with us.

I'm sorry, I don't mean this to be such a downer of a post. I'm just so upset.

Ok, I must go, can't watch the other cams as I did before this, too.

Thank you all--especially those who were on the ground today for being there as our eyes--for sharing your thoughts and emotions.

God bless our eagles.

OK.... This is the 3rd year I have watched.... What does this mean for Belle and Liberty? Eagles mate for life, correct? Can that intruder eagle "steal" Liberty away from Belle?

Yes, now that Joy hasn't moved for as long as it's been, I'd have to say she is gone now.

I don't know exactly how it will play out, but I'm sure Belle is up to holding her territory now that she can get food again.

I don't believe they will start a new clutch this year. Norfolk did, but their intruder showed up early in the incubation period. This is more like the year they lost all 3 eggs to the late snow storm.

This is the first pair I watched on-line and it's still my favorite. I hate seeing stuff like this happen, but it is the natural world, and it's purely natural forces that lead to it....

Have only been a watcher since Palmer so don't know if Belle and Lib have ever had to deal with an intruder before. May they too learn from this and know better how to handle any intruders in the future.

This is the price we pay for loving animals - wildlife or pets.

The good news is that because of people like us, people who care about these creatures, this is NOT a "silent spring" - with birds' songs and cries (even ones we don't like to hear) absent due to pesticides like DDT having obliterated so many of them.

Bald eagles in the lower 48 might have been totally gone by now, and they might not be thriving and competing for territory, such as we have witnessed here.

This sight is heartbreaking, but in the grand scheme of things, bald eagles in general are doing well because people like us have cared so much. And we should keep on caring, even though it may hurt when we get so attached and inevitably lose some of the magnificent creatures whose lives we follow so closely.

Bev. post pictures on your blog and tell us about the pictures here. We just have to click on your name, then your blog and we can see the pictures.

Belle is looking at egg adn listening.

I have been watching for three years, this is my 4th group of eaglets. I do not remember an intruder. Paula? Jo?

@kickngbird - that was so lovely an so very heartening. Thank you.

Well I want to stand by all of you and to be honest I want you to stand by me. I want to know what happens next with adults "I guess" but I don't want Belle to be hurt. That now really frightens me. I don't have as much faith as I guess I need that those who could help her would indeed do that either although Randy did boost that thought the other night. I must remember that.

For me its gonna be one day at a time, hour at a time minute at a time or comment at a time. I do need you BUT I don't need certain things to find peace.
Also there are lots of new folks and of course lots of old folks here "not talking age". You will never even know if I go away for a while. BUT I will know.

(((((GROUP)))))

Break time. Cleaned out a birdbath. It looks nice. Very warm today with storms tonight. My neighbors loved thier dinner which was all served and cleaned up BEFORE life fell apart this afternoon. I am glad for that.

LOL Cathy, I have thought that before. A "like" button would be handy! ☺

There was one the first year, in 2006, but it was very brief. I don't think it hung around very long.

PammySue said...

This does suck, but the reason Trudy is here is because eagles are flourishing, so there is more competition for space.

I would also like to 'like' kickngibrd's comment.

This is most definitely a female/female battle, and it's not over yet.

There may have been a couple of other "fly nears" as well, but nothing like this.

Belle honey, it is time to kick some hussy tailfeather.

A "thumbs up" button would be good for KBirds statement.

kickngbird Thank you. I am also thrilled to read Belle is eating. She both breaks my heart and eases it all at the same time.

OK I am leaivng now but see what happens when you post and then read back to see what you missed.

floralgirl said...

It seems like she is really now realizing that the eaglet is not waking up. She looks at it so tenderly. I really wish Liberty would fly into the nest.

BEagle said...

Belle is leaning down toward the egg as if listening.

paula eagleholic said...

Still some small cries from Belle. She is standing at the 2, with the fish between her talons. She is not eating. She glances down into the bowl and cries.

I do not know how to make a blog . I tried yesterday so Maybe my hubby will help me tonight.

I may sound tough, but my heart is like jelly.
I am watching and posting through streaming tears.

More than once over the years my hubby has said that I have to be tough if I am going to care about nature.

I head up a falcon watch and have lost 2 youngsters to buildings, during fledge. Even though my heart broke, we had to go on for the others. In the last 3 years we have rescued 6 .

Cam viewers are an important process. Because we humanize, many are saved.
I truly believe, birds mourn, birds rejoice and they have personalities.

I think biologists do not humanize because they deal with so much. but deep down, I do believe they cry with us.

Another hug for all here

I know I said I would be silent ,except to report

Harbinger said...

I need to go and make dinner for the hubby. Love to everyone and lots of {{{hugs}}}.

Seems I remember so well the first year (2006) Steve trying to warn us about things like this. There were three eggs that year.

He kept saying, don't expect all three eggs to hatch. When they did, he told us it was possible all three would not live to fledge.

When they all fledged successfully, we were elated and I think ever since we have expected such miracles.

Over the years we have come to know just how much of a miracle that really was.

Nevertheless, I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. It has been up and down, but mostly UP!

Especially the friends we have made along the way.

OK I need a break Tori is not feeing very well today and having issues with her breathing, allergies affect her bad this time of year and being sick doesn't help. I am off to get her something to make her feel better as best I can, she wants rita's ice.

Hang in there everyone hugs to all.

BEagle said...

Well said Iris. Thank you.

paula eagleholic said...

Belle just about lost her balance. She was picking up the fish to move it. She is done crying for the moment and is eating the fish.

magpie said...

Hope that some Mommy Love will help Tori feel better pronto, Robyn

Let's all try to keep our selves together too, body and soul...hard to do with little sleep, much worry and stress, erratic eating...
but we need to be okay for OUR families, and OURselves, or if not, hope family and friends can help US out if we suffer ailments

Thank you Iris.

Belle is still looking at Paddy from time to time. She takes some really small bites and sort of holds them out over Paddy, checking to see if Paddy will respond.

magpie said...

so keep your cell phones or your cordless phones near you at all times - in case you need to call someone to help out

Back in a few, there are some things I need to tend to.

Oh my, Belle just offer Joy a small piece of fish, she got really close to her.

The Intruder can be learning much about Parental Behavior from Belle (and Liberty in his own way,) No Doubt !!!

paula eagleholic said...

She has stopped eating and is nearer the egg cup.

BEagle said...

She is lashing out now.

BEagle said...

That must be Hussy.

IrisF said...

Intruder again, Belle mantling over the fish and crying

BEagle said...

She mantled the fish in front of Hussy.

The past hour I believe I have been watching the grief of an eagle.

stronghunter said...

Hi,

Back from store. This is so sad. After the attack just now, it looked like Belle took a moment to mourn and then started eating with determination, ready to fight back.

stronghunter said...

She still hesitates as if she thinks that she should be feeding the little one. But she needs her strength to carry on.

stronghunter said...

Sadly, this is far from over.

movin said...

I guess we know Trudy is still in the area ... sneak attack. But Belle doesn't seem injured at all.

I wonder if that's the end of it.

BEagle said...

She may even brood this evening.

Genie said...

BEagle, I like to think we have been sharing Belle's grief, as we would a friend who had lost a child. And I will stay as long as she seems to still be grieving. I am glad to see her eating, as she does need to rebuild her strength.

She may not know who we are, but we know who she is, and the joy and excitement she and Lib have brought us is worth helping her grieve.

Anonymous said...

I just wonder how long Trudy will hang around. And how long will Belle brood? So very very sad.

Hugs to all.

I agree, Genie ~

6:56pm
Intruder flew in from 5(probably above0 and Belle chase d her off. It looked like a slight tussle but she was after Belles food.
so Belle is eating vigorously, finally, and just about finished.
My computer froze so I am posting this late.

Instinct had her go to nest bowl a few times but now eating it all.

She will have the energy she needs

stronghunter said...

We are near a split.

floralgirl said...

Well put, Genie, I intend to share her joys and sorrows, however difficult it may be. I have to.

Donnie said...

she's making a hole now.

paula eagleholic said...

Belle is digging in the bowl now, fluffing it up. I think she will probably spend the night in the nest. The egg will keep her there as well.

BEagle said...

She just rolled the egg. Sweet Belle.
She rolled it up close to PJ.
