BACK TO THE STORY ON BANDING THE 3 REBELS OF NBG

deb said...

Norfolk Botanical: Dr. Watts is still talking with the public and media
Norfolk Botanical: The eaglets are being returned to the bag

deb said...

Wow, it sure would have been fun to see that in person. We should see the bag coming up soon I would think.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

I am really anxious to see how the eaglets will do when they are back in the nest and how the parents will interact with them.

Mema Jo said...

It will be interesting to see them once they are returned to their nest and ALSO
to see the adults fly in.

Mema Jo said...

Helmet appears

hedgie said...

Hope it is soon, Deb. Hughes cop will put me in jail if I keep this live feed open too long! ARGH!!!

paula eagleholic said...

No word on where the parents are....

deb said...

Norfolk Botanical: The bag is closed, they will get ready to secure it to the rope for raising tothe nest
Norfolk Botanical: The bag is tied to the rope
Norfolk Botanical: The bucket is going back up

hedgie said...

Really too bad that we couldn't watch on-the-ground activities...boo!

hedgie said...

Wow, that nest is really swaying.

deb said...

Not since the early part of the process, Paula. Then one was flying over the nest and one flying somewhere else close by.

Mits said...

will be fun to see them put back, but wish they would hurry, got to get ready for zoo,

deb said...

Norfolk Botanical: Julien is moving the bucket between trees to get it back up to height
Norfolk Botanical: The bag is now being raised to the nest by rope

deb said...

Norfolk Botanical: Here they come
Norfolk Botanical: The bag is coming into the nest

paula eagleholic said...

Here they come!

deb said...

There they are.

deb said...

I won't post any more comments from the blog unless it is something informative about the eaglets.

Mema Jo said...

They are soooooooo calm looking!
Fantastic!

deb said...

They sure do look calm for everything they went through. Sitting there like nothing happened.

paula eagleholic said...

I can't believe that guy just touched the chicks beak...

hedgie said...

THree pretty eaglets all in a row...just look at how Middly's feetsies show!

paula eagleholic said...

Other than looking a little curious, and perhaps still in a bit of shock, they look no worse for the wear.

hedgie said...

So what was that all about? Are those silly humans going to leave us alone now? Momma, Dad!! Come back to us now...we're hungry! We've had a rough morning!

hedgie said...

Still see an adult flying in the background.

paula eagleholic said...

All eyes...well two of them on two eaglets, still on the guy and last bit of rope...

Mits said...

they look like.....now what?

hedgie said...

YEah, man, we're watching you...goodbye!

Mits said...

good little eaglets.....:)

Mema Jo said...

I guess the 2 little boys are facing us and the 'unknown younger one' has its back to us.

You think they are calm or are they just traumatized? I guess Norma was at Study Club and missed this. I am certain there will be lots of news coverage on
WVEC.com later today.

paula eagleholic said...

Hedgie - you can't see any adults at NBG...that movement behind the nest is on the ground

Mits said...

don't let the branch hit you on the way out:)

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Those eaglets are as still as can be. Probably wondering what in the world just happened to them!!

Mits said...

I see cars going by, but no eagles

Mema Jo said...

Come on Mom & Dad - Reward them with their lunch!!

Mits said...

ah...do you think they have gone?

Mits said...

they look great.....relaxing in the nest

Mits said...

now I see people walking by the nest

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Lynn, it is still snowing in Bluefield but not sticking. This is just too nuts.

Eaglets look traumatized for sure.

Mema Jo said...

They are each looking in a different direction - guarding their nest in case more intruders come at them.

Wanda - sorry we didn't take you up on your suggestion yesterday to just ride on over to Norfolk and witness all this!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I was still hanging out on the other blog page!

paula eagleholic said...

Yea, we should have, Jo!

Eaglet in the middle has let out 2 yawns....poor thing is pooped!

Mema Jo said...

Sharon - I just checked out your Jefferson cam to see your snowflakes!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Why is it that at our nest, we can't get even near the tree during nesting season but these folks can go all the way to the nest at Norfolk?

deb said...

The blog froze up for NBG, that is why they didn't post anything more. Okay, now I need to get busy, have to pick up Mary for kayaking at 12:15.

hedgie said...

Guess there are just allowances made for banding purposes, Sharon. We should be so lucky, huh?

paula eagleholic said...

Awww, 2 NBG eaglets are napping now

hedgie said...

They do look pooped. Hope mom and dad come back soon. Gonna shut it down now, so won't see them come back. Keep us posted, anyone who can keep cam up! Deb, thanks for blog narration!

Mema Jo said...

Thanks again Deb for the commentary during the banding! Enjoy your day!

Hidey will never know what she missed and I don't think she really cares about wearing a silver band! lol

Mema Jo said...

Forgot to mention to all of you ..

Happy Earth Day

Keep it Green!

Costume Lady said...

Yesterday WAS wonderful! I still feel like it was all a dream...can't believe all the wildlife we saw and heard. It was so perfect that it seemed as if everything was STAGED! Greg was a WONDERFUL tour guide and Loretta was SUPER! I could have gone on for another 20 or more miles on the boat tour, it was simply AWESOME! The bus tour was great too, but, couldn't see as well as on the boat. Gene is editing our photos right now and I will post them as soon as he gets done.

He enjoyed the trip so much, that he wants to go back..Yay!!

As always, it was wonderful being with you ladies again...can't do it often enough:)

Costume Lady said...

DEB...YOUR COMMENTARY WAS AWESOME! Thanks to all of you commenting on the banding...after trying Lynn's suggestion to be able to open NBG, I still couldn't get a picture, so thank you all!
Now...if we had gone on the Norfolk, like I suggested, we would have been there in person;)

Mits said...

thanks, DEB....GREAT JOB:)

Mits said...

off to get dressed for zoo, hope it is not too crowded....

Mits said...

I talked to Ceil this a.m. and she had such a good time, as did MM.

Costume Lady said...

YES, I DID FIND THE GAS MONEY JAR!
You all are BAD! Now, you know I told you all that this trip was my treat, because I love you all so much. Now, I will keep the money in the jar until I can find a way to spend it on you all!
I was so glad to have you along on such a wonderful trip...to be able to share a day like that with friends is PRICELESS!
Hope we can take another Field Trip...maybe to Texas. LOL

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO COULDN'T BE WITH US, FOR KEEPING US POSTED ON THE GOINGS ON AT OUR HOME FRONT!
Hope to see all of you at Open House in October:)

I typed all of the above and Blogger Cop got me, so I had to try to remember what I said...Forgive me if I repeated myself???

hedgie said...

Strange, Wanda...it worked for my PC but not for the laptop (netbook!). Sorry you couldn't get it. Have you been able to watch cam before? I had been until a few weeks ago...don't know what changed.

Mema Jo said...

Time for me to get some lunch.... Sorta missed breakfast due to the banding..

Will the WV baby eagle come back to the nest after it leaves for the first time. Or is that it for the nest?

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Yes, hopefully Hidey will come back after the fledge. That shows us it was a successful fledge. They hang out around the nest for a month or 2 after fledging.

Costume Lady said...

Hidey will come back to the nest for a short while, then will leave for parts unknown and begin his own life adventure.
WELCOME TO OUR BLOG!

deb said...

The eaglet will come back for a while, but will leave the area after a few months.

I am off, bbl.

paula eagleholic said...

Hidey only has one little piece of fluff left on his head! He's seems pretty comfy in his bowl today.

NBG eaglets just resting in the nest...one is preening...

Lolly said...

Hi All! Sorry I had to miss NBG banding. Have read through Deb's blow by blow narrative. Thanks Deb! We went to Josephs program and now getting ready to go outside to work. However, I am sleepy! Oh well!

Lolly said...

NBG eaglets are sacked out. Guess they are plum worn out!

Anne-Marie said...

Jo I clicked on the link just in time to see a beautiful Osprey, I think. My computer would not take a picture but it gave me my thrill for the day. Thanks.

Mema Jo said...

I am sure the fresh air will wake you up!
But a panda nap sounds good too!

Glad you got to see the school program - grandkids are great!

Mema Jo said...

NBG nest - we are watching and waiting for the adults to return! Little ones seem to be doing very well.

Mema Jo said...

Anne Marie - I can't take a pic from that cam either. You may want to go to Momsters and view the pics from the trip
we took yesterday to Loretta's Patuxent River State Park. You would have loved it!

Lolly said...

Yes, Jo and it is so important to have someone there when parents are invited. You see them craning their necks looking for family. Laurel, as a teacher can not go. Joey really should not leave his office. Joseph beamed and waved when he came it. Had a chance to get and give a hug and kiss and then we left.

I need to get busy.

BBL

Mema Jo said...

Well I am taking a break - need to get dressed for the day! You 2, even though an hour or more behind me, have done more this morning hours then what I will probably do all day.

Be sure to look at the OK cams.
The colors are great!

Wow..interesting weather today, just had a quick storm with cold hail coming down ! nasty -luckily it was a small and fast shower. ALways a farmers nightmare-hail.

NatureNut said...

Happy Earth Day.
I added a couple more pics to the Momsters Yahoo trip album. One shows the wild rice in the summer, as all we saw yesterday were tiny sprouts & lots of old dead cattails. I think there was also a Lolly & Jack sighting.

hedgie said...

Raining and very windy here now, too...52 degrees, but I swear it looks like there's some of Sharon & Sissy's snow mixed in!

hedgie said...

Not hail cause it's not bouncing....whatever...it is coming down hard rain now...and the poor dog next door is out in it...either too dumb to get into dog box or too big for the size of it (I feel this is so)...no one home....breaks my heart...just one of the reasons I'm putting up the privacy fencing.

NatureNut said...

Wow, squealing just announced Lib flying in with a fish! Got dumped under that stupid curvy stick.

NatureNut said...

Good--tried to move that stick, but it's forked so part is still in center.

NatureNut said...

While ago was writing that Hidey was getting covered by fluff, but wind blew some off.
Dumb IE just peeled away in the middle of my sentence. Don't know if it's the wind at the nest or here!

Adult at NBG

Anne-Marie said...

well Its now noon and I forgot to eat breakfast again. I'm off for a while. Hope you guys have a beautiful afternoon and I wish I could send you some of this heat...

paula eagleholic said...

More big raindrops as the nest....Belle is trying to cover Hidey as best she can...

paula eagleholic said...

I think Hidey is too big to get under the parent, although he still manages to fit his head under Belle!

paula eagleholic said...

LOL, and half his body...amazing!

NatureNut said...

Hidey getting early dinner---wind is noisey. Guess it isn't raining there.

We were so lucky yesterday w/sunny, 70 day. Today it is cool, windy and mid 50s.

paula eagleholic said...

NBG eaglets are a pile of snoozing fluff....

Hidey is eating again!!

NatureNut said...

NBG has slideshow of eagles going to & from bag in nest.I saved one of those pics. They are pretty snoozy now. Every time I try to capture an NBG pic by hitting Ctrl&Print screen, etc. I get a black pic!? Oh well, they do show stills often.
Paula, Will Picasa album be on your blogspot? I can't get in to Picasa.

paula eagleholic said...

Heading home, cu later!

paula eagleholic said...

I'll do that, Nature. It will be on later this evening...

hedgie said...

Posted some photos in the album, adding to the better photog's collection!

Feeding is now happening in the
NBG nest! WHoo HOo! Hungry little rebels!!!

Mema Jo said...

I can't get over how calm and cool they were as they were getting banded!
Amazing!!!

NatureNut said...

Just now on NBC 4, they did a story on the Patuxent. Fred Tutman, the Pax Riverkeeper was narrating while on water at Jug Bay Area about pollution problems & they showed the house that cut all the trees down toward the bank!!!We saw it yestewrday. Greg K. had mentioned he was have meetings today w/officials.

NatureNut said...

sp. - delete the w.
Maybe this will be shown again later.

NatureNut said...

Thx, Paula. I wasn't planning to rush you! Just didn't know where it would be. ;>)
BTW, your Hooting video should get sent to Greg! Shoulda thought of that. I was thinking we needed a tape recorder, but video does sound, too, DUH!

deb said...

I am home, we had a beautiful day on the water of Owl Lake (self-named--Roger saw an Owl there). The sun was out, we didn't have much trouble from the wind. Saw egrets, pelicans, coots (of course) RTHA, bufflehead, etc. The only shore birds we saw flew over our heads, so we don't have any idea what they were.

terrible news :(

hedgie said...

N&R, sure hope they catch whoever did such a horrible thing and prosecute to the fullest.

hedgie said...

Good video...thanks to WVEC for carrying that!!!

Niece and Randy said...

I agree hedgie..no mention if the eagle might have had little ones to tend..I hope not in this case

Mema Jo said...

The link Niece/Randy gave us concerns:
Bald Eagle Shot In Cumberland County
State Offers $5,000 Reward -
ROCKWOOD, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is offering a $5,000 reward after someone shot and killed a bald eagle. The bird was found near the Pine View Elementary School in Cumberland County. It was apparently killed with a shotgun sometime between March 20-30. Bald eagles are protected under federal law.
The person responsible could face fines and up to a year in federal prison.

Mema Jo said...

That is about the 3rd feeding for the NBG eaglets since banding this morning.

Mema Jo said...

Loretta - hope I catch that news clip - I remember the bald spot on the hill where all the trees had been removed by the new owner.
Thanks for the photos you have over in the album.
It really was a great day yesterday - thank you again and again and again!!!
You can tell Greg that too.

hedgie said...

Deb, just caught your big stick video from yesterday---fantastic!!

Mema Jo said...

janiece - try to go over now to Eaglet Momsters and view the pics from yesterday! Happy to have you in our NEST!

ceil said...

Evening all. The pictures from yesterday are great. Next year we are going to Norfolk for banding. Just watch the video of the banding. Look at those big feet. We watch our nests and other nest but until you see a human holding an eaglet you do not see the size. WOW

hedgie said...

Looked online to see if Ch. 4 posted that report....no such luck! Like I said yesterday...feds prosecuted Dan Snyder for doing the same thing along the Potomac, so would certainly think they can do it to those owners, too.

ceil said...

I agree Lynn. That was horrible to see all those trees gone for a view. Just watched the wvec video on the banding of the eaglets. Good story. I learned that the purple band means it is from the Chesapeake Bay region. Other states have different colors so that the place of origin can be seen at a glance. Thanks again for everyone who took pictures yesterday.

Niece and Randy said...

Mema Jo , I just put in to join momsters on yahoo. Is that where the pictures are?

Mema Jo said...

I'm with ya Ceil!
Norfolk bound! That has to be awesome to see an eaglet's size when being held!

DEB - just watched your video Big Stick
Now we know how those marks can get onto
the eagles' beak! He just chomped that stick into bite size pieces...

NatureNut said...

Thx, Jo. It was a wonderful day! I think I'm going to email or tell our Park Dir. about the favorable response from everyone and the most generous donations from the group! It pays to waive charges!!You guys collected way more money than the fees would have been!!
Glad you gave the jest of thue eagle story---I can't bear to watch it. I'm still wondering too, about what happened to the CO missing eagle.

NatureNut said...

Ceil, I agree with your Norfolk idea!!!!Did you tell Helen we had cherry flop? I'll have to send her the recipe! ☺

NatureNut said...

Lynn, I'll have to ask Greg if he took the officials & reporters on the river. If so, he might know of any action that will be taken on the lawbreakers.I called Park this AM & he had gone to Mt. Calvert-- maybe by boat to pick up the group.Hope they did all this in honor of Earth Day.

Mema Jo said...

The CO nest at Ft St Vrain info doesn't have anything new to report since the 18th of April. I just checked out the forum. They promise to report any signs of the adults.

Mema Jo said...

LOL Loretta I am so glad you caught Lolly & Jack out there spying on us in the Patauxent River!

Ms Bookworm said...

Hello, everybody,
Boy, I really missed all the excitement today-- my Earthlink was down until after 3:00 pm PST!
Gotta get caught up on what's happening. Glad all went well with the banding!
Thank God it's cooler in CA today!
What a relief. One question-- did the parents build up the left side of Hidey's nest, or is it my imagination? Looks like they've been moving furniture or something. Does the wind blow from left to right? I've missed so much today it'll take a while to read everything and get caught up. It's amazing how much you can miss in one day! Take care, everyone.

hedgie said...

Ceil, they fined Snyder $37,000 and made him replant...but it will be many years before it begins to look decent again. It's been 3 or 4 yrs. now.
Loretta, I'd like your recipe, too, please!!!

Mema Jo said...

Hi There!
Let me give you some things to click on to see what is going on....

Ms Bookworm, in order to see some of the photos from yesterday's trip that the local yocals took you need to belong to the Eaglet Momsters yahoo group. Go to
this blog's home page and on the far right side is the Yahoo Eaglet Group link. See if you are interested in joining our nest - it's main use is to receive emails/news from the group and has links for other sites.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Good evening all. Hidey looks exceptionally black this evening or is it that the sun is not shining on her right now?

deb said...

N & R, the pictures are in the Photo Section, when you get in there, the second album Patuxent River is where the pictures from yesterday are.

NatureNut said...

Clicked to get back on this site & got "you are not authorized to view this site..." DUH?
Just saw on Fox News the little white fuzzy RTH babies being held. They were removed from the faulty light post in TX & going to new home. They will be released from sanctuary in 6 mos.

deb said...

Parent just arrived!

deb said...

Poop shoot and maybe a little dinner.

deb said...

Both osprey at BWO, oops, one gone. Come on, lay an egg for us!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Well, that had to be the biggest poop shoot I have ever seen come out of an eaglet!

deb said...

Dinner for the adult, Hidey is watching the fish get eaten, wishing for a bite.

deb said...

Greenery, we are going to have some color in the nest!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Well, Belle just came in with a tree!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

We don't have leaves that big in Bluefield yet but of course, it was still snowing as of this morning!

sara said...

Maybe this is for a little shade for the sunny weather expected over the enxt couple days.

NatureNut said...

What lovely Earth Day decorating! We don't have leaves that big either, I don't think.

deb said...

We don't have leaves, yet, but any day now they are going to pop out!

deb said...

Belle looks like she is settling in for the night.

hedgie said...

I am getting the same Not Authorized message for the cams...

hedgie said...

I thought Hidey looked darker today, too. Maybe because he got drenched yesterday and again this afternoon...LOL! Wouldn't think all those feathers could have grown out in one day!
No big leaves here, either!

sara said...

Pictures from yesterday were great. Liked the turtles and the owl. Looks like sunshine followed you yesterday and in Beckley we had rain, sleet, hail & snow.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

There goes the geese!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I don't think we had hail Sara but we did have snow and sleet and rain! Sick of it - time for SPRING!

sara said...

Yesterday we had everthing. This morning we had little ice balls and then turned to snow. Didn't see the sun until after noon. I'm ready for SPRING!!!! It's time to plant flowers, get the garden ready and be above 50 for the day.

sara said...

Can see Hidey peeking out from under Belle's wing. Well just as I typed that she moved around and covered him/her up.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Sara, we need to get together and have lunch one day or something. I was at Tamarack last Saturday for a performance by the Concord Collegiate Singers and the ConChords, of course my baby is in both! :)

sara said...

I was at Tamarack on Sunday for dinner. Along with 1/2 the people that live in Beckley, I think They are always so busy, but the food is good. We will have to plan that sometime.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

We have fallen to #8 on Beakspeak for most watched in the last 7 days.

sara said...

Just watch the slideshow of the Norfolk banding. Poor little eagles were laying low when they came up the tree. Wasn't able to watch at work. For some reason wouldn't allow me access to feed.

Mema Jo said...

Don't believe it Sharon!
Our cam is in our favorites and I forget that to be counted on beakspeak you must click on the link on beakspeak!!!! Duh!!

Guess I'll try to remember to do that and
help us get up to #1

Mema Jo said...

I would love to see you Bluefield and Beckley Momsters get together!!! That would be another Local Yocal Group!!

Everyone remember Oct 17th for Open House

And there will probably be an early June
weekend for the nest visit before Hidey
takes first flight!

deb said...

Wanda has started loading her pictures on Wild and Wonderful. I just had a peek and we still need to see more of Paula's.

anna bishop said...

I just visited the Norfolk site a little while ago seems they don't have a nite lite yet, but viewed the pictures were really cool!! Looks like you leaves are out on the trees ours are only little buds yet hope soon now they will open. Looking forward to visiting the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, Minnesota this summer. My husband and I feel like we know those three beautiful Eagles personally ha ha!!! Now we get to view their relatives in the wild!! This is so cool!!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I think our Hidey is a tad bit spoiled! :)

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

She is going back and forth on each side of Belle but staying under Belle the whole time.

sara said...

I'm not sure how Belle continues to cover him. Still can't imagine 3 in the nest.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Well, by this time, the three eaglets would have the nest almost filled and no room for Belle. They kind of huddled together to keep warm after they got this big.

sara said...

I can't believe how fast Hidey has grown.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

It is really interesting when there are 3 and they are all practicing wing flapping at the same time!

Lolly said...

Have been watching the OK eaglet do nestorations. It is so cute!

Mema Jo said...

Lolly Check our Momster pics from yesterday - Loretta's in particular

Lolly said...

paula eagleholic said...

Wow, lots of good chatter on here tonight...missed the story on Channel 4.

Son was fixing my dryer when I got home, the belt broke...so of course had lots of behind the dryer cleaning to do, plus put new vent hose on it...then took dogs for a walk.

I put the video on youtube of the owl...give me a couple of minutes and I'll post it on the EM blog...Nature, then you can show Greg the video...also got a video of Hidey today to.

Then I'll finish the pics...Loretta, can you access Picasa from home? I don't think it lets me put my slideshow on the blog.

The 2 little RTH chicks are doing well in their home on the fire escape! Adult is with them.
I hope the chicks they had to remove from the light post will survive and be able to be set free. I hope the adult RTH are ok.

deb said...

We had a wonderful day, it was so nice and some of the birds let you get close in a kayak. Most ducks, though, just take off when you hit the water.

Mema Jo said...

I was watching Lake WA = chart shows that hatchings could be 35 days
from Mar 22 and that would be around
Apr 26. So maybe this weekend we should be trying to see around the tree trunk in the nest for a bobble head!

Mema Jo said...

WOW! I am eating 1/2 cup of my
sugar free Blue Bunny peanut butter ice cream for a snack!

deb said...

It will be interesting to see how may chicks hatch at LW, since we have no idea how many eggs there are.

Mema Jo said...

I think they are guessing there are 2

Like you say we will be in for a surprise!

deb said...

Did you know that Blue Bunny ice cream is made in LeMars, Iowa, just across the border from me?

Have been looking at the NBG banding and your trip pictures. I can not believe Loretta caught us!! Jack and I thought we were being really sneaky and that no one would see us!!! Everyone should have a sub. They are sooo much fun! :)

Was surprised at the size of the triplets. They are big!

Blue Bunny - I had some while in hospital
Then I found it at Walmart - love it - especially when you're on a low carb diet

Lolly Lord only knows where you and Jack are going to show up! Loretta will catch you though!
The banding video is great - Surprising how large an eaglet really is once you see it in relationship to a human!

The Barred Owl Hooting incident was one of the highlights of the trip!
I just couldn't believe my ears or eyes!

You need to learn that call Deb - especially if you go again to Owl Lake!

Was reading comments on my blog. The lady who I met at the OK eagle nest got on and made a comment. I hope she joins us here. They really love finding and watching the OK nests.

Both Roger and Mary have bird call programs on their IPods. We use them mostly to verify sounds. Roger does use his to call owls. There are Barred Owls in Stone Creek Park down by Sioux City, but that is all I know about around here.
