Now the loons are farther out again

hedgie said...

GOing to take Liesl out again and then some sofa time to watch taped Jeopardy. BBIALW.

Lolly said...

Well, come on, will you!! Get those babies in the nest!

Kay said...

LYNN, I have to admit, I already had a taste as soon as I brought it home---you know, just the creamy soft stuff on top due to it being in the hot car for about 2 blocks. ☺ It was soooooo good ! I just know Seth is going to love it !

hedgie said...

Awwww, Judy, thanks! Once upon a time, I would get bitten LOTS and have really BAD reactions! SOmething about my body chemistry changed, I guess, which made me NOT taste good. So maybe another reversal???!!!

hedgie said...

LOL----JudyE...it is THIN skin which comes with age. We've gotta just own up to the fact that we are starting to get the kinds of things we see on our Moms and before that our Grandma's!!

Kay said...

Well, now, didn't that split just slip right up on us as we watched the loonies !

Paula got waxed !

Seems like the parents would love to settle in on the nest for the night, but the kids are saying, aw shucks mom n' dad we don't want to go to bed yet. Amazing how quickly and happily they take to water ! Guess that's what a loons life is all about.

Hoda said...

In Alberta I used to live next to Victor Lake where we had a pair of loons. What I learnt from observing them is that when people in canoes started to bother them and come close to their nests they used to hide the chicks in brush and go away from the spot to distract the boaters.I thought them very smart.Maybe this pair is doing the same and that the chick is simply hidden for safety???

Kay said...

LOL, LYNN, "they" say our taste buds change every so many years. Maybe the way we taste to squeeters changes every now and then, too. They've loved me for over 70 years ! I hope I start to taste bad soon !

Hoda said...

No I see that you all can see the chicks so it is not the Alberta scenario

Lynne2 said...

Hi gang...thank you all for your thoughts and prayers regarding Brother Cat.

We spent a lot of time this evening walking all over, calling for him. THere is still no sign of him.

I'm hoping that he'll still show up.

Lolly said...

Lynne, print out flyers on the computer and pass them out to neighbors. That has worked for us a couple of times.

paula eagleholic said...

no loons in sight!

Lolly said...

One time we took our boat in for repair. AhSo, our Siamese was in the boat. We didn't know it! Went looking for him. No kitty. Thought about the boat. Went to the repair place and yes they had seen AhSo. Business was betweet two very busy streets. Asked at a Putt Putt next door, yest they had seen him. So, we crossed the street and in that neighborhood passed out flyers. We got a call. AhSo had taken up in their garage. Yea!!!!

Kay said...

Time for me to call it a night. Hope all "shuttle eyes" get a good nights sleep and show up at SSCC for coffee and chat in the morning.

Praying for all in pain, out of work, coping with bad neighbors, suffering without A/C..... Praying, too, for our furry friends, Brother Cat and dear ol' Nugz.

May God Bless and Keep you all !♥♥♥

Lynne2 said...

Lynn, that's just crazy about your neighbors. Geesh. So sorry you have to deal with that and hopefully the HOA will be able to do something.

Lynne2 said...

Lolly, wow, your SIL...that's some serious diet. That's pretty scary if you ask me. I hope the Dr knows what he is doing. 500 cals a day seems dangerous. How long does he have to do that?

paula eagleholic said...

Geesh is it 10:30 already! No wonder Nugz is bugging me for his snack!

Lynne2 said...

temps are going down now, really nice breeze!

Lynne2 said...

going to go scrub the sweat and dirt and tears of this day off.

Lolly said...

Yes, Joey is closely monitored by a doctor. After a period of time they increase the calories. I do hope this doctor knows what he is doing!!! Yes...500 calories is starvation! Or close to it!

Lolly said...

But, this is just like Joey to try something different. He is always trying some kind of diet and not sticking with it. I say, how about just eat less, eat wisely and excercise. Duh!

paula eagleholic said...

Glad he is doing something, Lolly. Losing the weight should help his BP and cholesteral levels...I didn't realize he was 6'6"...he is a big guy.

Lolly said...

Played football...high school and college.

Lolly said...

That is why my boys are so tall! Laurel is also 5' 11" and I am not short! LOL

Lolly said...

Played football at East Carolina and U of Houston. He hurt his back, left football and went to Stephen F. Austin Univ. where he met Laurel.

paula eagleholic said...

Guess the loons aren't coming back!

I'm done for tonight, gonna hit the hay.

See you folks in the morning light!

(((Hugs to all ♥)))

I just hope Joey's energy level holds up. I have been doing a good
bit of cutting down on portions.
Trying so hard to give up the breads and pastas and oh yes, pastries. lol

hedgie said...

Lolly, East Carolina was on my short list, if I remember correctly. Nothing worked out, tho'; didn't get to go away for school. Had to go local.

Goodnight, Paula, Lynne, Kay....and anyone else ready for zzzzz's.
I am calling it a night, too---last night was too short!

Prayers for Brother Cat's safe return home.....and for all in need, pain or want.

I would also like you to please add our minister, Pastor John, to your prayer list. He is going through a very difficult situation.
Thank you.

East Carolina, Lolly. That is my undergraduate school!

Gotta head upstairs. We had a little problem come up with Flash. Poor pup has an infected anal gland. Trip to the emergency vet cost $500.00. I stayed here with Hunter while Kathryn took Flash.

It turns out that the anal gland should not be expressed too often, something Kathryn had had done a few times when he was groomed.

He was in a lot of pain and was one stressed doggy. He's now wearing one of those collars, which is also upsetting for him. We finally got him calmed down. They sedated him, so maybe he will sleep well tonight.

I have also been busy writing essay questions for my dual enrollment students. My department chair says that she doesn't want to assign dual enrollment students to honors classes anymore. It causes teachers to have to teach two different courses at once--two syllabi, two class rolls, two gradebooks, and, for me, two exams for one class.

God bless and good night.

stronghunter said...

Hope Brother Cat is on your doorstep tomorrow morning, Lynne.

Hoda said...

Goodnight every one...I cannot stay up any longer.
I hope Brother Cat returns by tomorrow Lynne.
God Bless you all and the creaturs too.

Good Morning Eagle Land Friends.

Prayers for LYNN's Pastor John, and for LYNNE's Brother Cat. I sure hope he has come home LYNNE. ♥

Pretty well caught up now on the blog, but running behind getting ready for work.

See you Early Birds in a little bit at the SSCC.

For all our Giant Panda lovers, here's some exciting news from this morning's Washington Post.

Baby Giant Panda for National Zoo?

Lori O. said...

IT'S 5:00 IN EAGLE LAND!

GOOD THURSDAY MORNING, JUNE 2ND!

Kay said...

Good Morning gLORI !

Here's hoping the D.C. Panda is preggers and will give birth soon. Interesting that no one can know for sure !

The loon family has left the nest, taking to the water. Loons turn out to be an intersting group of birds. " Loon chicks are able to swim and dive right away, but will often ride on their parents' back during their first 2 weeks to rest, conserve heat, and avoid predators. Chicks are fed mainly by their parents for about six weeks but gradually begin to feed themselves over time. By 11 or 12 weeks, chicks gather almost all of their own food and have learned to fly." So, they only need a nest for about a month and we needn't have worried about the chicks so quickly jumping into the drink !

Kay said...

SHIRLEY, what's this about a new assignment to write essay questions for dual enrollment students ? Something you must do before your retirement date, leaving behind for your replacment, or something to be used in your last few days of teaching ?

Lori O. said...

Good Morning KAY!

I was just thinking this could be a rather depressing day with our cameras still down...

The LOON NEST is EMPTY this morning.

And, of course, the NBG EAGLETS at WCV are out of sight while their enclosure is upgraded for greater flying space.

Kay, could you hand me a tissue, please?

Kay said...

LYNN, will be praying for your pastor !

SHIRLEY, poor Flash and poor pocketbook. I'm beginning to think those medical policies for pets are a good idea.

LYNNE, hope Brother Cat is back !

Lori O. said...

Found this on the NBG Eaglets site on the moderated discussion from last night during which Ed Clark was answering some questions.

I remember we had talked about the remains of the NBG Mother eagle and someone thought NBG got to keep the remains - here's what was said:

10:18 [Comment From Smokester in NJSmokester in NJ: ]
Hey Mr. Clark...i was wondering if the mother's remains were sent to the National Eagle Repository. I don't think I ever saw anything on that? Thank you.

Wednesday June 1, 2011 10:18 Smokester in NJ
10:18 MVK: I am not Mr. Clark - but yes they were.

Kay said...

Sniff, sniff, I feel your pain, LORI ! I still have the goshawks, several osprey nests and several eagle aeries to keep tabs on. Watching life in the wild means lots of joy, some heartache and a lot of goodbyes each year. The real void for me is the period between about Sept.1 and Jan.1, but I expect that to be a little different this year. Why? Because I have my Momster/Dadster buds to help me get through those slow months !

Kay said...

All is quiet at the Goshawk nest, no wind, kind of shady, two snoozing chicks. Their fluffy white down giving way to lots of dark pin feathers now. No adult in sight right now, but no doubt very close by.

Kay said...

Seth and Malcolm will be with me for several hours starting at 10 this morning. Happy to see our temps are dropping back to the more normal 80 degree range. That will make dog walking a lot more pleasant than it has been for the last few days.

DanaMo said...

Well my third son turns 16 today! Wow I still don't understand how they are getting older and I am not!
First day at school with no students. Lots of work to do, but it should be easy to get it all done!

Kay said...

Hi DANA ! Happy Birthday to son #3 ! Any big party plans or is your family partied out ? So, Grandpa has him all set for the driver's license, huh ?

Lori O. said...

Poor SHIRLEY, oooooohhh poor FLASH! FloBear has had that before and it wasn't fun for anyone.

HOW MANY DAYS LEFT SHIRLEY?

Lori O. said...

KAY, we'll always be here for you!

Good Morning DANA!

Lori O. said...

KAY, what's up at the other cams?

Loon nest is still empty and I'm missing the "ThreEaglets" at WCV.

Lori O. said...

OH, it looks like the Loon parents are floating on the lake near the nest. Too far to see babies though.

Kay said...

Most of the eagle nests are still under darkness. Isla's nest cam is down and the Finnish osprey nests are frozen. Lots of frustration today !!!! Going back to the loons and will check Decorah.

Kay said...

Decorah threesome very cute today. Looking around as if to say, "where's breakfast". One fascinated with what appears to be a piece of bamboo, carrying it around, pausing to gnaw on it. A sib tries to take it away, but fails.

floralgirl said...

Morning all:)
Today's nest weather-Sunny. Highs in the lower 80s. Northwest winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.
Have a great day!

Kay said...

Hi MEGAN ! Looks like your heat is breaking, too. A nice day ahead !

Loons are being elusive today. An adult occasionally floats into view, but can't tell is there is a chick on board. The wind and rough water has set in again with the rising of the sun.

floralgirl said...

Hello Kay, yep looks to be a nice day here, don't know about that wind in the forecast, but we'll see.

Lori O. said...

KAY darling (lol) before you hop off, yesterday you spoke/wrote of "dear Rico." What kind of bird was Rico?

Kay said...

Wow, my eyelids are getting very heavy. Think I'll plop down on the couch, listen to some fine soft rock on the radio and perhaps drift away for a while. It won't hurt to get more rest before I pick the boys up---I love having them, but they do wear me out !

BBL

Lori O. said...

Go ahead KAY, take a nap. I'll wake you up at 9:30 so you'll be ready when they arrive.
((BIG Hug))

Kay said...

LORI, Rico was a yellow head parrot---kind of the typical "pirate ship mascot". He had a wide and clean vocabulary. When Stan got so sick we gave him to my stepson. Rico didn't hit it off with Stuart's wife and they sold him to a pet shop that was thrilled to get him for an in store attraction. He "had a stroke and died" shortly before Stan passed, but Stuart didn't tell me until later as he didn't want to upset his dad. Rico lived approx. 30 years.

Good morning, everyone.

Loons seem to have left the nest. Sure wish they had stayed a day or two more.

Decorah eaglets looking good. Lots of practice there.

Bears busy doing bear things.

Lynne2, if Brother Cat has not returned, try putting outside something with his/your scent maybe near the door, a vehicle, etc.

Lynne, sorry you were bitten but I think it's just cause you're so sweet. Prayer for Pastor John.

Kay, enjoy having Seth and Malcolm with you today.

DanaMo, happy birthday to your son.

Shirley, why are you writing essays just days before school ends? Sorry about Flash and hope he will keep the collar on.

Cooler here this morning. Nice, if brief, relief.

Can always try:

1. The old sound of a can opening trick.

2. Putting out a can of tuna and carrying it with you on your search walks.

3. Print signs and put them up now. The sooner the better.

4. Free lost & found ad in local newspaper.

A big hug, Lynne. I'm thinking positive for you.

Judie, the essay questions are for the exam. Only four students have to do an essay exam--they get college credit. The other students get multiple choice. I can read four essay exams before Monday, the day senior grades are due.

Flash is ok this morning. Will is supposed to check on him today. He is having difficulty with the collar thingy. Poor guy.

We were worried about him last night because he was so stressed that he was panting and shaking. Kathryn sat with him for a long time and stroked his ears.

Hi LYNN - I just checked Sauces, too and didn't see anyone. Eaglet still in the nest. Too bad it doesn't have sound.

Lori O. said...

Does anyone know what that nest at Sauces is on top of? Sometimes the view is so beautiful, I call it "Modern Eagle's Nest" - because it's so sparse.

Lynne2 said...

still no sign of Brother. Flyers are on mailboxes and poles all over.

If you remember, Brother has been a bit sick...Cancer worries, or just IBD. He'd been doing fine but a couple of things were "off". Usually his depo shot lasted a month (for the diarrhea) but when he got it last time, it didn't last but 2 weeks. So I had just taken him back last week for another. His stool did firm up. Still, cats hide illness really well. He may have been sicker than we knew. He didn't eat dinner that night, but he did go for our late walk with the dogs with us, and even played with Daisy in the field. And then there was the vomit by the door. That worries me. He was gone for 3 days once before, but that was years ago.

Anyway, keep up the prayers! There is still a chance we'll find him. I just wish I didn't have to go to work today.....

hedgie said...

Now Finney2 is frozen, too....wonder what is going on? at least 1 is still running.
Geesh! Gremlins? Sunspots??!!!

Lori O. said...

Ah, LYNNE - you think BC was so sick that he went away because he associates the pain with where he lives and is trying to escape it? Sounds odd, but it's something I read a long time ago. Who really knows how a cat's mind works? Just trying to throw things out there.
Prayers being said for both of you.

Lynne, I know your heart is heavy with worry, but going to work may be just what you need. Maybe Bro Cat will come home while you're gone......and be waiting for you with one of those "who, ME?" looks.

Chores NOT finished here, Lori....just puttering along slowly getting them done!

Just a quick peek on. Really wanted to know about Bro Cat and see that he has not made a grand appearance. Oh, Lynne, we all feel for you. This is not what you two needed on top of all the other "junk"! (((Hugs)))

Rodney got here late. He had gone to bed at 1 the night before, and got only 2 hours sleep. By the time we went to bed he had been up almost 24 hours! Have had a great morning...breakfast on the patio. It was only 72 and pleasant. Up to 87 now and climbing.

I have been baking this morning. Made bars last night and made another new recipe today. Looks like a winner if you like chocolate and peanut butter!!

Jack and Rodney are enjoying each others company and out in the shop playing. I pretty much have the day to myself and plan to do some more baking.

Read the loon report and it is so nice to read his great description of the loons. I can just see the adult diving with the loony on his back and it coming back up like a cork. LOL

Have a great day everyone. Lynne, hang in there. We will keep the prayers going for Bro!

REMEMBER KETTLER the HAWK This was on face book The hawk has been there over 20 year has passed away

JudyEddy said...

The lifespan of a Broad-winged Hawk in the wild is 12 years; at the age of 23, Kettler may have set a new record for longevity of a Broad-winged Hawk in captivity. We are fortunate to have had her in the WCV family for so many years.

This is part of the article toooo cool that she lived that long

hedgie said...

RIP, Kettler. Long life, for sure.

Good late afternoon, everyone.

Back from a day of flower shopping. Got a butterfly bush, day lilies, lantana, some herbs, another tomato (cherry), and a few other things.

Hot and tired. Legs and ankle not happy with the shopping expedition.

Will return after dinner (supper).

Mema Jo said...

JIM Dr Sharpe is coming to band
the eaglet at the Sauces nest

JudyEddy said...

the sauces nest is also one that is on a mtn top?? climbing it???

JudyEddy said...

I wish we could see its terrain also like the other video showed but of course that was after the fact so maybe they will do the same kind of video One could hope

Mema Jo said...

Judy - I am not familiar with the
Sauces nest - new one to me but
I would presume it is high up on
a mountain top (cliff)

JudyEddy said...

I was hoping they would start it before I have to leave I guess Jordyn and I just could be late for supper

JudyEddy said...

Looks so pretty and really high up

JudyEddy said...

I wonder if he is on is way up and with one of the adults in the nest this could get interesting ya think

Mema Jo said...

I would guess that this banding won't start until A40 flies off.

JudyEddy said...

On the facebook page IWS I thought they would have something on it by now but not yet

JudyEddy said...

Do you think they are on their way up since it looks like a long climb up

Mema Jo said...

Judy the first link I did is for the IWS forum. I am certain they will have a video of the event afterwards.

JudyEddy said...

I love the way the parent looks at the eaglet

Hi! Have Sauces up and watching!

We have been sitting here visiting and just saw our resident bunny rabbit go hopping around the back yard. Hope Annie does not get the idea to go after a bunny!

JudyEddy said...

I just made the screen bigger little fuzzy but it bigger

JudyEddy said...

Is anyone else experience some interference with the cam feed

Lolly said...

I have always wondered about the hummingbirds...are they the same ones each year? Always put the feeders up April 1. One year before I got the feeder up...there was a hummer looking around...as if "where is the feeder?" So, had to have been a hummer from the year before!
