Update

The have been questions about egg viability/hatching times that Steve W. and I will try to address for you.

Normal incubation period is about 35 days, although a few sources say longer, up to 45. We think that the cold weather during incubation can have an effect on the eggs that could add several days onto the normal incubation period. This could explain why we don't have another hatch yet. We have likely exceeded the time period that we saw a hatch last year.

With that in mind, the days are ticking off, and we think if we do not see a hatch by the end of the weekend, we may be facing egg viability problems.

Bent says this:

"...He gives the period of incubation as 34 to 35 days under normal conditions, though interrupted incubation may require a somewhat longer time. "

Let's wait and see.

Thanks for the new thread and some input on this issue.

Thank you Steven.

I was wondering how long they would continue to try to incubate should the eggs not be viable, myself. As well as what would happen to the eggs.

I guess for now it's think positive time and just sit and wait. :)

Let's just hope and pray that the eggs are viable and if not, well, we'll face that when and if we come to that. I know how hard it is with each passing day...some of us went through this last year with the eagles that nested in British Columbia. What more can I say, besides "keep a stiff upper lip (even though it makes you talk funny)" Love and hugs to all!

Live cam is up again!!

Thank you! =)

Thank you Steve for the information. I think most of us has had this possibility cross our minds. We have seen 1st hand this season by watching the FL nest. That couple stayed with their infertile eggs for 54 days.
I will think positive thoughts and be looking for that first egg to hatch. Must keep the Faith and if something negative should happen I will still keep the Faith........

Hi, I did send out a diffenent pic of 2 eggs, this a.m., but the thought has been in the back of my mind, that egg #3 is 37 days today and there were 2 on the 9th of Feb.

Mema Jo said...

Certainly should be time for a switch. I think there hasn't been any since I had left around 2:15

Mema Jo said...

Didn't see a thing through all that. Did anyone else?

Sandy said...

Of course we have all thought about the age of the eggs, but I, for one, can't give up quite yet.

Would the cold have hurt them? I'm guessing yes here...

gotta go do homework.

kirine said...

I thought I saw a dark spot on one of the eggs.. could be nothing though.

Glad you're back from the Zoo - I am always afraid they will want to keep you!! The pic from this am is over on Momsters if anyone wants to look.

MITS said...

Sometimes I don't want to leave the zoo, Jo, lot of people there today and it was chilly.Tian put on quite a show for Mei, but all he got from her was a swat and a bite...don't think she is ready for the next step yet

Lot of egg turning in our nest tonight:).

Aline said...

I watched the Horny Island Bald Eagle's nest in British Columbian last year, both eggs failed to hatch. Sunny asked:"What will the adults do to/with the eggs if they don't hatch?" The answer to this is: the adults consumed the remains. It is nature.

MITS said...

Thanks, Aline.

paula eagleholic said...

Or they could just discard the broken shells, if that's what it turns out to be. They generally won't just leave them lay in the nest. I hope we don't find out, but we may. The storm may have been to much for the eggs. We will find out either way.

I am leaving - be back around -Guess I don't really know...whenever the big kids come home.......

GOOD MORNING, ALL...

Troubles with AOL this morning so I haven't read e-mail, if there is any.

It looks as though Liberty and Belle have been building a nest divider (playpen, windbreak??).

I guess there's no sign of a chick yet?

Happy day,

Jim
